In college lingo, sales is called merchandising. Some people learn a lot from the courses. Some regard them as a waste of time and just want the degree to open doors.
Another way to learn technique is to get a job as a telemarketer. Their job is quite different from a retail sales clerk who just takes orders (from the viewpoint of the telemarketer). You have a room full of telephones and someone who is a good salesman listens in and corrects your sales technique. Used to be called a boiler room. Still another way is to sell door to door. The disadvantages of this are you only learn one technique and nobody to correct your mistakes.

There are many types of sales jobs, from retail sales to cold calling. The highest paying sales jobs are in the B to B (business to Business) category, and obviously the larger the sales responsibility the better the pay. Ive been in sales and sales management for a very long time. I have found that a very good sales course is the Dale Carnegie Sales Course. While it is a bit staid and old fashioned, it does teach you the mechanics of selling, and the underlying motivation of the buyers. It is worth the money, regardless of whether you are selling Real Estate, sewer pumps, or perfume.

There are hundreds of books on "sales" Zig Ziglar has some really good ones (to start with).

What type of sale do you want? Consumer? B2B (Business to Business)?

There are few "techniques". You don't sell to people. You help them buy. The best salesperson asks a lot of questions and then helps the customer meet their needs.

To be successful you need to work very hard & be product knowedgeable. There are professional classes in selling. Beforeyou seek them out...... read a couple of good books on sales. Get a "feel". Then you'll find the right way to go (for further education).

Many good companies have continuing sales education.

Neverb be anything less than honest!

Getting a degree in business won't hurt you ... but sales is very different from management or other focuses. (Marketing is related to sales, but is DIFFERENT ... )

Sales ... only cares about SALES. If you perform, you can be a high-school drop out - they don't care.

I would never say don't go to school, but I would suggest supplementing what you do with some of the private courses / seminars out there. Read things like "Getting to YES!" (You might also look into something like the Franklin-Covey Planning system, you need to be VERY organized in sales!)

Sales is a difficult and challenging field - but can also be VERY rewarding fiscally.

Just thought of this, a friend did sales for Kirby Vacuum Cleaners - they actually do really good sales training ...

Most sales jobs do not require you to be a college grad, however, the college diploma does help. Find an entry level position, be honest, provide excellent and quick customer service, deliver what you promise and work long hours. Start reading self-improvement books by starting with Spin Selling. It will help you overcome any objection thrown at you in business and/or personal matters. Good luck!

There are definately courses in college to take regarding sales, marketing, public relations, promotions, advertising, etc. I would say to get a job at Best Buy or something like that to get your foot in the door of sales, and then go from there. Sales is the one of the oldest, most profitable professions in the world, but it does have its bad points- no commission, no benefits in some cases, etc. Good luck!

The best way to learn sales is to get a job doing it. Then read some books on the subject, about how to sell.
Some jobs require a 4 year college degree but not alot.

No matter what you sell you have to believe it's a good product. You are presenting it and giving details about it to people who may not know such a good product is available - you tell them about the product. You listen to them and answer their questions and offer explinations. Then you close the sale. Closing is when they agree to buy. Basicly you have to ask them to buy the product. There are many ways to do this. There are a lot of tricks to being a good salesperson. Some can sell anything including shoddy products, inflated prices and scams. Buyer beware. A good salesperson provides a service and is honest.

Good classes to take would be advertising, marketing, business, and probably even some psychology courses would help.
