My daughter is starting a new school this fall (3rd grade) In a new town. I was talking with her and thinking about having a holiday party for each holiday (halloween, thanksgiving, easter etc) and possibly having a slumber party for new years eve. Any ideas for how to plan these out and what would be a good number of kids to invite? I am hoping it will help her to make new friends.

I agree with lillilou in that this seems a bit much. I think a Halloween party might be fine because by then your daughter should be getting to know the kids in her class. As far how many to invite, this question is so tough and depends on your daughter, your finances, and maybe a school policy.

Not to spoil your idea but just to give you some other opinions . . . I would do a slumber party on a day other than New Year's Eve. People will be out of town or have family obligations and that may impact your attendance. And I would probably have to know you pretty well before I let my daughter spend the night at your house on such a party night - meaning I would expect there is no alcohol will be consumed even by the adults in the house.

I bet your daughter will make friends easy. I think if you overdo it,she might think it wierd that no one else throws so many parties.

Well, what I would do before you plan any of those parties is make sure that your daughter is at least friendly with the people your inviting. I think you should just invite the girls over since she'd probably have a better chance of becoming friends with them than the boys at her age. Plus, it would also save you money on food, refreshments, and supplies. What I would do is not neecessarily consider it a party, but more like a social gathering type thing. Like, say for an example it was Halloween. What you could do is just have a movie-night at your place outside. Get plenty of snacks and refreshments and make sure that the movie is something that they'd be okay with. If I were you I would stick to a social gathering typed party so that all of her peers are in one place meaning that she could have a better chance of meeting them unlike a party where they'll all be running around the house. Also, make sure the gatherings are on the proper dates. (Like don't have your Christmas Party on Christmas Eve) Hope everything goes well.

I think the parties might be overkill. Plus then you get in trouble with who you do invite, and who you dont invite. Plus many schools have actually started (not really banning) but discouraging b-day parties (at least invites given out in school) becuase of over-extravagant parties and kids getting left out. I know my neices does, they want an all or nothing party.

I think a better bet might be to get her involved in something like a dance class or music outside of school. Often in smaller groups, its easier to make friends.

Other ideas would be to look if the school has a website, and maybe a parents group. Your daughter could find a pen or email pal prior to school.

For a slumber party you should invite 7 girls. Make sure their are plenty of food and snacks for the night.

go to familyfun.com
They have GREAT ideas for all sorts of parties/holidays.
I would say 5 or 6 is a good number.
and just plan them before the holiday or even after as many families go away for vacations.
I think it's a great idea!
