i Have heard they were good with kids, that was one reason I wanted one, we have a 2 year old and a 1 year, we also have a husky which he needs a dog to play with. As for a big yard our back yard goes out about 200 feet form our house. We went camping this weekend and somebody had one and my dog was playing with him and I just fell in love with the breed. But I wanted to know more about them before getting one.

I grew up with Great Danes. They can be a bit difficult as puppies because they are not aware of their size...they will knock little kids down without meaning to, wipe the coffee table clear with one swipe of their tail, etc.
The only other "worst thing" I can think of is -- as someone else said -- their short lifespan. I lost my Danes at 10 years old and 6 years old. They are wonderful dogs, and it's heartbreaking to lose them that young.
Otherwise, they are affectionate, laid back (as adults), and have a goofy "sense of humor". Their size makes them intimidating, but they are very sweet dogs. They will eat more (as size dictates), but they are worth it. Early obedience training is a must.
Good luck!
ADDED: Please research your breeders carefully, if you decide to get one...the breed is predisposed to crippling genetic problems, make sure you buy from someone who tests for them. More health info:

First off I'd like to say Im kind of timid around larger dogs but I love Great Danes! My dog's favorite playmate is actually a very tall GD. From talking with her owner the worst thing about her is her size and that she sometimes forgets she's so big and tries to be like an "average" sized dog when it comes to playing.
All the ones I've met have been very sweet, kind and smart. I've also heard they are very good with children. Some groups even recommend them as apartment dogs (though a cramped apartment probably wouldn't be the best!)

Well you guys must be a big dog so be prepared for the pros and cons of big dogs verses little or medium sized ones. You cant pick them up or anything if they get lose and u have to catch them. Make sure u get one that is pretty well mannered because those big dogs will surely scare people when they bark or jump up. they could even nock people down. But if ur prepared and u get a good dog than i say go for it!

The ones I have seen are big babies. They don't appear to want to be too far away from their owners and apparently follow their people around quite a bit. For all their immense size, they don't fight, chase, or annoy cats, ferrets and other dogs. My sister-in-law got one because she wanted a huge dog (dumb reason to get one) and then gave it away because it destroyed her blinds while looking out the window. They need the space to run so don't be like her and attempt to shut on up in a small area. It was a lovable, sloppy dog, thrilled to see anybody, so if you want a friendly one, Danes are the way to go.

Pros: they are very gentle, but their appearance alone is enough to keep intruders away. They love kids and just about anyone that they come into contact with. They are smart, easy to train and not hyper active at all.
Cons: They don't live as long as most breeds - 8 years is typical. They are prone to many maladies (but most purebreds are.) They eat and poop a lot, and anytime something goes wrong healthwise it costs a fortune because they are so big.

I do mastiff rescue and might permit you recognize which you extremely ought to benefit up in this breed, there are lots of extensive dogs surrenders. large danes are large canines, they choose to delight you and that they are somewhat straight forward to coach, that being pronounced they actually need you and choose you to play with them because of the fact a bored GD will discover issues to amuse itself, and many times they are issues which you wont like. you mustn't ever anticipate any dogs (different than possibly a komondor) to be protective, once you do you turn your place of %. protector over to the dogs, this makes for an extremely frightened dogs because of the fact the dogs realizes which you are the single that ought to guard it. Your problems with your final dogs can rather be corrected with this dogs in case you verify to take it to obedience college beginning with the 1st week you have it, and a week after until eventually at last it earns it dogs good citizen award. in case you won't be in a position to handle to pay for this, you won't be in a position to handle to pay for to possess a dogs. yet another factor is to seem on the cost of vet therapy and scientific coverage to your dane, it is going to be heavily greater than for a smaller dogs.

The worst thing would be their realtively short life span. Large dogs tend to have a shorter life span than small dogs.

I had a neighbor who had one and the only problem I saw was that he saw the food first-I'm 6'1 and he could stand on my shoulder's. But they are truly very loyal and friendly-just big kids who sometimes like lap's.
