Hi there. I'm 18 and fresh out of high school with my first college semester starting this september. I'm interested in getting a credit card, but is it possible to get one without needing a bank account? I ask this because in the past, I've used my parents card but they've taken away the privilege since my older brother used it irresponsibly.

Is there a way to get a card by going to a store and using cash? I'm just curious since I want to order something online and use my own money that I've been saving up all these years ( I maintained my first job for about a year, but I'm too lazy to deposit it so it's just in a safe place in my room )

INSTEAD of getting yourself in a bind with a credit card. Most grocery stores and drug stores carry reloadable VISA/Mastercard buy a few of those register them online and buy what you need.. Just read the fine print some cards cannot be used online... Good luck

Since you are just 18, its going to be hard, because a lot of banks and institution want you to have an account before they will give you a credit card. Since you are in school I know Bank of America has a free checking account for students, and you also get a debt card. Once you establish that you can try to get a student credit card, if not then what Bank of America gives you is a partially secured credit card. Where you deposit $99 and get a card with a $500 limit. If you keep it in good standing, pay on time, don't go over your limit, etc. They will give you your $99 back and up your credit limit. That way it looks great on your credit and will help you out with further loans.

You responsability is still lacking, you need to open an account and establish yourself. Dont bounce any checks and never go below a fair dollar amount in your account. No matter how much you MUST always put money into your savings account each and every pay check. This shows the bank that you are responsable with money and they will be your biggest champion for getting a credit card. Once you have done this for about three months get a Mervyns card or some other department store ( dont go credit card collecting ) and never go past half of what they give you in credit, once you get the bill pay it off completly, after a few months you can us them as a reference as well and they will probably increase your limit. After that its up to you but again, NEVER charge more than half you credit limit, pay it off every month and watch you credit limit increase and you interest rate decrease, after about 2 years you will be able to get just about anything you need. But keep in under control.

You do not need a bank account to get most credit cards. If you want to use your own money it is best to open a checking account & get a check card that you can use as a credit card but the money comes right out of your bank account. Plus your money is safer in a bank then in your room and handling a bank account is a very good tool to learn.

No moving money to your Capital One card won't help you just yet. You just need to pay as much as you possibly can towards your Bank of America card every month and do not use it at all. Clip coupons, downgrade your cable or cell phone package, eat mac and cheese a couple nights a week. You'll be surprised how much extra money you will have to put towards your credit card bill. That's the best way to pay it down. About the Avon account. It's time to talk to your mom. Tell her you need her to pay that off NOW it hurting your credit especially if they are calling you b/c she is late paying. You can also call Avon and see if you can be taken off the account you may need your mom's permission to do this but if you can you should and soon.

Although a Credit Card may seem like something you need, yes they are good in case of emergencies if you can limit it to that only. I really dont recommend that you get one. Get a checking account, and get a debit card. These you can use like a Credit card, but the amount come out of your checking account. Credit cards can get you into alot of trouble, and thats not something that you want fresh out of high school. Trust me I have learned my lesson after being almost $10,000 in debt from credit cards. Once you get one, you will get offers in the mail continuously and it may seem cool but trust me its not.

Yes you can get a secure credit card but it will require a deposit. I have a new millenium bank secure visa card, all i did was made a deposit and i got my card. Not sure about getting a store card with cash.

You sound responsible. What you need is a pre-paid credit card. That's where you give them a cash deposit and you can use the card up to that amount. Get one though that reports to the credit bureaus, not all do. You can find those cards here:
