My eye doctor insistes that I use the drops for 6 weeks after cateract surgery; but the package inserts say two weeks for Nevanac and ten days for Econopred Plus. I have dry eye and that makes this even more pressing as they warn about that. The MD says 6 weeks is standard and the benefits outweigh the risks. Do you have any knowlwdge of this?

Princeidoc is 100% correct...we have our patients use Pred Forte after surgery for 6-8 weeks, depending on the procedure. Six weeks after cataract surgery for Pred Forte and the Nevanac (we use other meds) usually for 5-6 weeks is definitely NOT out of the ordinary. Sometimes it's even longer depending on the person and how they are healing.

Even when I had my PRK, I was on Pred Forte for a month when my hubby only took it for a week after his LASIK.

Listen to your surgeon...they have a lot of experience in postop swelling and inflammation and how to prevent it.

You do NOT want inflammation in your eye. If your eye does get inflammed, it can be quite difficult to control, so prevention is the best deterrant to this problem.

For the dry eye component, your cataract surgeon should be able to recommend artificial tears after surgery and you should check with him, but you should be able to use them as often as necessary to help with your dry eyes.

6 weeks. definitely 6 weeks. possibly longer, no matter what the "package insert" says.

i have a habit of arguing with MD's frequently lol, but not on this. no way is 2 weeks long enough after cataract extraction..

Follow your doctor's advice. The surgery creates inflammation of your eyes and the drops stop it. If you don't use them you can suffer excessive scarring, pain and poor visual outcome. Six weeks is the standard.

If the dry eye is worse, ask for additional non preserved lubricants.
