The colors do compliment each other well. Go for a medium auburn shade and tell your stylist to stagger the streaks a little so they don't line up perfectly, because streaks perfectly across from each other equals an obvious trip to the salon, and the point of highlights is to look like you got them natural (my stylist once said you know you've accomplished this if the questions are "where did YOU go on vacation" or something along those lines, rather than the question "who does your highlights")

Yes, sort of a moot point now. You are going about this all a**-backwards. You should be having a consultation FIRST before doing anything, even making the appointment. This is normally at no charge in most salons, so make use of it. They can do a proper analysis of your hair and skin tones, to see if it is possible to actually get what you want, and if it will look good on you. They don't have time to do this now, at the appointment. You may not get what you are expecting... if you even know what you want. There are many things you need to understand before doing this, and clearly you don't. That is all explained at the consultation, and you need to think about it for a few days to know what it is you want. This is a permanent change you are looking at, not easily covered up (you can only get rid of it by cutting off that hair) and it requires a change in the way you look after your hair. This can get expensive, so you need to know this. Going in blind like you are doing is not very bright at all. And next time, never trust "friends" like this. Let them experiment on themselves.

WELL I HAVE DARK BROWN HAIR... AND I DID DYE MY HAIR AUBURN THAN I WANTED HIGHLIGHTS FIRST I WOULD TRY THE AUBURN ALONE... THAN WAIT TILL THE COLOR GRABS YOUR HAIR WELL U KNOW SO IT WOULD LOOK MORE NATRUAL, THAN MAYBE A FEW WEEKS LATER GET YOUR HIGHLIGHTS DONE.. ITS A VERY HOT TRENDY LOOK AND IGET TONS OF COMPLEMNETS...
I CANT STREESS IT ENOUGH TO GET IT PROFESSIONALY DONE WHEN U ARE WORKING WITH THE RED HAIR COLUR AND BLEACHING THERE IS NO TURNING BACK AND U WANT THE BEST CARE FOR IT...
YOU GO GURL LOL
GOOD LUCK!! =0)
