I think the fact that Tate only lost 3 fights while Spinks lost 17 fights makes this an easy question to answer. Tate would win with a fourth round technical knock out. Look at a common opponent of theirs in Gerrie Coetzee who Tate beat for the WBA World title right after Coetzee had knocked Spinks out in 1 round in his previous fight. All Spinks had was a brother and son with more talent than him as well as a disputed decision over the always insanely over rated Muhammed Ali.

What a snoozer of a matchup. Slow plodding Big John Tate would have hugged Spinks to death. Remember Holmes/Spinks? More of the same. Snooze!
RIP John Tate

I always hated Tate, and was never happier than when Weaver left him flopping like a fish on the canvas. I think if Leon got a hold of Tate in the early days before he became a big crack-head, he would have beat him despite the major size difference.

Tate in a laugher.
Although I think Michael Spinks in his prime would have boxed Tate's ears off!

Tate. He would have been too big for Leon.

Truthfully, this could go either way.On paper, it looks like John would win easily. But if Leon prepared, a big if, I think he could score an upset decsion due to his workrate.
