I have been working out 3 times a week for the past 3 weeks now. I do a warm up, then weights, and finish off with swimming for some cardio. I am very overweight and thought that going from NO activity to this much would drop some pounds by now, but I have actually gained about 3-4 pounds and NOTHING is fitting any better yet! Is this normal or do I need to do something else? I am actually upping my routine to 5 times a week starting this week to see if that'll help as well.

Your weight is only one measure that you should use to monitor the progress of your workouts. Remember that muscle weighs more than fat. If you are putting on muscle, you will gain weight. Take measurements (using a tape measure or altering tape) around your waste, love handles, and thighs and keep a journal of your measurements. You can also get a scale that measures percent body fat. Also, most people burn less calories than they think they do. Some people will increase their eating habits because they are “working out” and actually end up ingesting more calories than they burn. Just stick with it. Even if you never lose a pound, you are healthier living an active lifestyle than a sedimentary one.

It is not uncommon to shape your body and lose hardly any body weight because muscle is more dense than fat is. I would not worry about it too much just keep working out and be happy that you are one of the few overweight people that are actually getting up and doing something not just complaining about being overweight.
Another thing to is that if you are hitting really heavy weights at low reps them mass is what you are going to build. If you want to tone up and slim down the do light weights at high reps and that should show faster more dramatic improvement in your shape.

I ave no idea...just stick with it. Trust me! You're building muscle, burning fat and helping your heart. It WILL come off eventually. Remember to eat healthy! Good luck :-)
