I always thought a wishing well was where your guest give you advice on marriage and life. There is another place for cards. I believe you are right.

Wishing wells are both card boxes and "Wish" boxes in many weddings. I've been to weddings where there are tablets of paper and pens beside the wishing wells for guests to write words of wisdom, jokes, and encouragement to the new couple. The wishing well is always big enough to hold cards as well.
Word of caution: Always have someone responsible for removing your wishing well/card box half way through your reception. You would be horrified/amazed at how many people have had their card box stolen from their wedding...not necessarily by family/friends but vendors, outside staff, or people who just walked in, knowing a wedding took place.

It can be both. At our wedding we will have the wish tree but I will provide small envelopes to hand. Guests will have their cards and they can choose if they just want to give us advice or if they want to give advice and cash. The envelopes are there so you can't tell who gave money or how much so nobody is shamed into forking out more money for the wish tree.
It will be a live tree and after the wedding we will plant it and have a picnic under it on our 5, 10, 15, 20, etc. year anniversary.

I've seen both. The ones fro messages have little cards that tell the guests to write down their wishes. The money ones usually have a card with a little poem that instructs guests what to do. They also have them for depositing cards...or you could get really creative and do all 3. You can find various types on ebay. Do a search for wedding well, here's the link:

A wishing well can be what ever you want. In order to make it better understood you could have the money wishing well and a mailbox with all kinds of post cards for your wishes. This would allow you to have both and you could have a friend email them to you. It will be like the rsvp's all over. Everyday you look in the mailbox and see what the cards say!

I don't know about wedding wishing wells but I went to a couple baby/wedding showers with one. That was where people dropped in little gifts (they would buy a big gift and then put small gifts like rattles or candles and stuff into the well).

I think they are different in different regions. Where I am from Wishing Wells are for showers and they are for the little extras that you dont want to wrap, like chip clips, wooden spoons, etc. (Or at baby showers, pacifiers, burp clothes etc)
I'm in New Jersey

I've only seen Wishing Wells at bridal showers - it's used for small gifts - like dish detergent, sponges, etc. - kind of gag-like gifts.

I thought a wishing well was for putting pantry items into, like spices and stuff...
