Their names were erased from the Book of Life. Therefore, they could not exist in terms of spiritual salvation. So, they are not the descendents of Abraham.

Jesus spoke many times in parables , even here in the text the Jews did not understand him. He was not speaking literally that the Jews were not descended from Abraham but that like 8:39 says if they were his children they would do the works that Abraham did in his life.

John 8:23 ... I don't know where this verse is applicable to your question. However, Jesus was refering to the fact that he was from above... from Heaven. As God's only begotten son, he lived "above" before he came to earth. Those he was speaking to? Were from "beneath", the earth.

John 8:40 - The religious leaders were claiming that they were righteous based on their lineage. Jesus was pointing out that they were proving false to their lineage by their attituude. How? Look at verse :e continues discussing their attitude when he tells them "you are from your father the Devil".... Was he saying Satan was their actual father? I don't think so.

Taking verses piecemeal from The Holy Bible cause misinterpretations. You need to read all of John 8.

No, in fact He said:
"I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you." John 8:37 (King James Version)
but
"Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it." John 8:44
and
"He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God." John 8:47

Yawn...this is from the Bible as popularised by the Roman Church. Try reading the originaql Gnostic gospels, it'll turn your view of the world on its head.

BTW - Jesus didn't say any of those things, the guy that wrote the Bible did.
