Yes! I believe we invented God because in reality, we still have little clue as to why we are here, where we came from. Life, just living it, has no guarantees, we create illusions to make it seem more bearable, less unpredictable, more balance.
A God in the picture is like a parent figure, who'll take care of us if we look up to him, obey him, worship him. Etc!
However we still have to deal with the reality of existence, often harsh, with or without the concept of a "God"
Even when we can not understand the reason(s) for someone's untimely death or in the event of a major disaster, we still choose to delude ourselves by saying "God works in mysterious way . . . " Grand illusion AND delusion if I'd be asked!

A delusion is commonly defined as a fixed false belief and is used in everyday language to describe a belief that is either false, fanciful or derived from deception. In psychiatry, the definition is necessarily more precise and implies that the belief is pathological (the result of an illness or illness process).
Yeah...gods and religion qualify as delusions, IMHO.

been reading richard dawkins? he's a clever guy. nah, i think it's a thing that people invented because humans are instinctively terrified of death and mortality. so heaven was a way out. and it was a useful way of making people behave, because they were scared that they would go to hell if they didn't.
i reckon it has now outlived it's purpose, because we now mostly accept and help the 'outsiders' that jesus was supposed to love. we now have realsied that black people the equals of white people, not their slaves. that people with diseases are to be pitied and helped, not ignored and shut away. of course, it's not like there is no injustice or terrible happenings. but i am of the opinion that rather to many of these appaling instances are the fault of many religions' predjudices.

No, even though Dawkins makes his point very well in his book. It was typically a knee jerk reactionist philosophy and it fails to engage with religious thought in any serious way" relying instead on extraneous quotation and anecdote after anecdote. Dawkins suffers from several problems when he tries to reason philosophically and complains of exercises in double standards. We all agree: religion can be bad. But the critical question is: compared to what? And here Dawkins is less convincing because he fails to examine the question in a systematic way. If discussions about disagreements between science and religion are to be worthwhile, they will have to take place at a far higher level of sophistication than Richard Dawkins seems willing to go to.

absolutely - without any evidence of the existence of god what so ever it would have to be said that religion is just an opinion and just because so many people believe it - blindly- it doesn't make it true--- good grief the religions can't even reach any common ground.

I believe Richard Dawkins should have chosen a politer title for his book, as he has inadvertently widened the divisions between believers and non-believers.
