I hear a lot of negativity about opposing religious views on here, so I'm wondering (this is primarily for those who post questions/answers about how "stupid" or "evil" or whatever a specific religion is) what would you do/say/feel/think if you woke up one day and discovered that someone you're close to, your best friend or even your own mother, was a member of the religion you've bashed the most on here?

I am an atheist,my wife is catholic and my best friend is muslim. In other words,it doesn't bother me one little bit

Among my good friends are two Muslims and many Christians. I consider those religions to be the opposite of my views, I am an atheist.

I am opposed to Islam and Christianity because I believe both are dangerous, divisive, and parasitic beliefs. I am not opposed to Muslims and Christians, in fact I consider the adherents to be the primary victims of religion.

I do not engage my friends in discussions about my views or theirs. If they ask me about my vies, I tell them honestly. If they want to know what I think of theirs, I will tell them honestly. That does not normally happen.

If they want to seek out information on a forum like this, they will encounter me or others and we can discuss issues anonymously. That keeps it out of the realm of personal lives.

I have a relationship with my friends for a long time before the subject of religion even comes up, if it ever does. If I love a person, it doesn't matter to me what their religion is. What matters is if they talk about it a lot, and none do.

atheist

The Atheist Bible, it could be said, has but one word: "THINK." - Emmett Fields

I already have best friends and relatives that are of an opposing religion and I just love them regardless. We intentionally never discuss religion to avoid getting into a rumble!

My best friend is part of a totally differant faith than me, hes Catholic, Im an Asatruar. I constantly used to make fun of the Catholic faith but that was probably mainly because i used to be a part of that religion n realised it wasnt for me. He stayed wit the religion, we have been in opposing religions for years, but we are still the best of friends and he even turns to me when people ask about the pagan and heathen beliefs and things. Occasionally i turn to him if i need something clarified bout Catholicism, but not usually, since i went to a catholic school for a few years and was raised catholic. For us our relationship hasnt changed much at all, we are still the best friends we always have been, and we both joke about our religions at times, but its alot easier to joke about the Catholic faith because of all the easy clear cut contridictions. We still make sure our jokes are in good taste so that its not offensive to the faiths. We try to have fun with religion but also be respectful of it. So nearly every religion is fine with me, and i try to be respectful of others beliefs and people tend to do likewise. The only religions i have a problem with are athiests because of the negativity many of them have, i can understand the ideas they have but they still tend to be negative to anyone whos religious. Evangelicals are also a group i have a problem with, to much of that if your not christian your a devil and if your not evangelical your not a christian crap, i know there are many that arent like that but its still a big issue they have along with those excorcism stuff during their masses and trying to convert every person in the world. Those the only religions i have a problem with, i still have friends who are in those faiths but I still try to be respectful of the differances. And i dont mind what religion people are apart of most of my friends are from differant religions, christians, jews, muslims, pagans, hindus, buddhists, etc...

I guess I'm glad I don't bash other religions. Two of my best friends are Wiccan, my VERY best friend next to my husband is an anti-theist/theism atheist, my husband is a non-religious theist, and most of my other friends are atheists and agnostics. I have very few Christian friends.

And I'm a Christian.

I am an atheist. My nearest and dearest is a fundamentalist Christian. Why would I do anything other than love him as I always have? I don't care about his religion, I care about his heart which is, by the way, in the right place.

Isn't any religion mankinds way of worshiping God? Did you really expect anyone to say they would kill or disown the opposer? Thats not reasonable.

my best friend and I do indeed have opposing belief systems, and we respect each other's rights to believe what we choose. My mother had a differing system from mine as well, and she respected my right to choose from the beginning, that taught me to respect the rights of others. It's a pity more people weren't brought up to be respectful.

I wouldn't care. All my friends are from different religions. The only reason I would argue with them is if they said something completely dumb and reasoned its intelligence with religion.
