as a sixteen year old, i feel like i have to save up a little money in the summer for future needs (ei. college, computer, etc...)
so i work at chicken express, a fast-food restaurant that serves chicken and such. so i'm working my shift making mashed potatoes and gravy, and a girl comes up to me and asks me if i know spanish.
i tell her, "yea, sort of," and then she told me that they need me in the front. honestly, i only know what spanish i have been taught at school and i'm in level three which is good enough to wiggle myself through a decent conversation.
so i get to the front and immediately a hispanic women asks me, "puedes hablar en espanol" (can you speak spanish). i tell her, "solomente un pocito" (only a little bit).
so i try my hardest to translate her order to my co-workers and in the end, everything turned out alright. the lady told me 'gracias' (thank you) and i replied 'de nada' (it was nothing).
the feeling i got from that experience excites me still!

Thats cause it felt good fro you to be needed and to be able to help someone out.
Pat yourself on your back.
And again for having the sense that most of your peers lack in doing something for yourself like working and getting some good old fashioned self respect.
Good luck in the future

Well, I have to applaud you for working to save money for your future. It's great that at 16 you're thinking about that,a lot of kids don't so stay focused and keep up the good work kiddo.
It's nice that you were helpful but perhaps you should have advised the lady to learn English so in the future she can be more independent. What if you hadn't been there?
This is America so it's very important for people to learn the language.

I know the feeling, I use to manage a resturant and I got that all the time, even in the drive thru. I did my best to help them. I did get tired of being called to the line time and time again, because my team did not want to wait on someone who didn't speak english well. The team members I had working in the back spoke english, but I spoke to them in spanish to make sure all directions were understood. The customers I did help always were very gracious for my help, and I felt good knowing that I did my job.

It always feels good to help someone in trouble, I helped a blind young lady last week who had only a cane and walked into some construction going on the sidewalk. she seemed to lose her confidence for a short while after she had knocked over a railing. I helped her cross the street even though my Hungarian is very bad.( I am living in Hungary for the summer) We are all suppose to be helping each other on earth but it seems most of us have forgotten why we are here.

I have nothing against being bilingual. Matter of fact, everyone should know another way of communicating.
But what if you had been off that day? I think that too many rely upon situations like yours to be able to survive in this nation instead of learning to do some basic communication in english. I mean, why did it need to come down to you translating for her to order, when if she had some very basic understanding of the english language, she could have gotten her order across to the clerk and all would have been avoided?
I think that if people desire to live in this nation, they should learn to speak the language here. I'm not saying giving up their native language entirely; but they should be able to go anywhere in this nation and at least be able to basically communicate to others.

You should be proud of yourself Sergio!
Many jobs nowawdays pay a bonus for bilingual speaking. That goes for most languages including spanish, chinese, armenian, etc., etc.
Maybe you should look into that:)
