When's the last time Middle-America ever spawned a progressive idea? Social change is always initiated by either the west coast (california) or the east coast (new york).

The 'heartland' usually has to be dragged kicking and screaming into the future.

Absolutely true.
It happened with Abolition.
It happened with Suffrage.
And it's happening with Same sex marriage.
Yes, kicking and screaming, the unwashed hoi-polloi have to be dragged into the future.

Progressive change may be initiated in some cases on the west coast, but most of the radical and kooky ideas come out of California.

And a lot of times it's because the social change is not for the good of the people. Middle America tends to have much more common sense then people on the coasts.

Oh brother! The "heartland" is the HEART of America! They are the folks who keep America strong, with farming, strong moral values and well grounded faith in God.

The left coast is busy worshiping celebrities and the east coast is busy making money.

While I live in the Pacific Northwest, I'm still a very conservative person with strong morals and believe that family and friends are worth more than gold.

I won't be "dragged kicking and screaming" ANYWHERE if it's considered progress! So much of our so called "progress" is to blame for the decline of America's values and strength. NO THANKS!

Could it be that maybe people in Middle America tend to look before they leap. I know that I , as a Middle American, like to get all of the facts and think about things before I make any rash decisions. And then, nobody drags me anywhere. I decide something and then I either do it or I don't.

I have a theory on that:

Moral certainty is always a sign of cultural inferiority. The more uncivilized the man, the surer he is that he knows precisely what is right and what is wrong. All human progress, even in morals, has been the work of men who have doubted the current moral values, not of men who have whooped them up and tried to enforce them. The truly civilized man is always skeptical and tolerant.

Historically, religion has almost always held progress back (most notably holding science back for almost 1500 years until Galileo).

Just one more reason to be proud to be from the heartland.

That said, I'm afraid that even that region is prone to liberalism.

Yoda Green: Many of the midwest states were the first to see women voting. In my home state, women could vote in local elections from the very beginning.
