Here's an explanation by Robert Green Ingersoll:

The New Testament informs us that Christ was the son of Joseph and the son of God, and that Mary was his mother.

How is it established that Christ was the son of God?

It is said that Joseph was told so in a dream by an angel.

But Joseph wrote nothing on that subject -- said nothing so far as we know. Mary wrote nothing, said nothing. The angel that appeared to Joseph or that informed Joseph said nothing to anybody else. Neither has the Holy Ghost, the supposed father, ever said or written one word. We have received no information from the parties who could have known anything on the subject. We get all our facts from those who could not have known.

How is it possible to prove that the Holy Ghost was the father of Christ?

Who knows that such a being as the Holy Ghost ever existed?

How was it possible for Mary to know anything about the Holy Ghost?

How could Joseph know that he had been visited by an angel in a dream?

Could he know that the visitor was an angel? It all occurred in a dream and poor Joseph was asleep. What is the testimony of one who was asleep worth?

All the evidence we have is that somebody who wrote part of the New Testament says that the Holy Ghost was the father of Christ, and that somebody who wrote another part of the New Testament says that Joseph was the father of Christ.

Matthew and Luke give the genealogy and both show that Christ was the son of Joseph.

The "Incarnation" has to be believed without evidence. There is no way in which it can be established. It is beyond the reach and realm of reason. It defies observation and is independent of experience.

It is claimed not only that Christ was the Son of God, but that he was, and is, God.

Was he God before he was born? Was the body of Mary the dwelling place of God?

What evidence have we that Christ was God?

Somebody has said that Christ claimed that God was his father and that he and his father were one. We do not know who this somebody was and do not know from whom he received his information.

Somebody who was "inspired" has said that Christ was of the blood of David through his father Joseph.

This is all the evidence we have.

Can we believe that God, the creator of the Universe, learned the trade of a carpenter in Palestine, that he gathered a few disciples about him, and after teaching for about three years, suffered himself to be crucified by a few ignorant and pious Jews?

Christ, according to the faith, is the second person in the Trinity, the Father being the first and the Holy Ghost the third. Each of these three persons is God. Christ is his own father and his own son. The Holy Ghost is neither father nor son, but both. The son was begotten by the father, but existed before he was begotten -- just the same before as after. Christ is just as old as his father, and the father is just as young as his son. The Holy Ghost proceeded from the Father and Son, but was equal to the Father and Son before he proceeded, that is to say, before he existed, but he is of the same age of the other two.

So, it is declared that the Father is God, and the Son God and the Holy Ghost God, and that these three Gods make one God.

According to the celestial multiplication table, once one is three, and three times one is one, and according to heavenly subtraction if we take two from three, three are left. The addition is equally peculiar, if we add two to one we have but one. Each one is equal to himself and the other two. Nothing ever was, nothing ever can be more perfectly idiotic and absurd than the dogma of the Trinity.

How is it possible to prove the existence of the Trinity?

Is it possible for a human being, who has been born but once, to comprehend, or to imagine the existence of three beings, each of whom is equal to the three?

Think of one of these beings as the father of one, and think of that one as half human and all God. and think of the third as having proceeded from the other two, and then think of all three as one. Think that after the father begot the son, the father was still alone, and after the Holy Ghost proceeded from the father and the son, the father was still alone -- because there never was and never will be but one God.

At this point, absurdity having reached its limit, nothing more can be said except: "Let us pray."

Now, if the trinity makes any more sense to you than it did before, let me know!

Firstly, the Bible does say that Jesus and God are one and the same.

Speaking about Jesus, In John 1:1-5 & 14 the Bible (NKJV) says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. ..." then, "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth."

Then, in John 14:6-9, the Bible says, "Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.' Philip said to Him, 'Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.' Jesus said to him, 'Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; sho how can you say, "Show us the Father"?'".

Jesus clearly equates Himself with God, the Father. There are also other verses elsewhere in the Bible which state or allude to the sameness of Christ and the Father.

Secondly, the problem many people face, I believe, is that God cannot fully be comprehended by our limited minds. We live in a world largely limited by our physical senses. Because we have not seen two or three people occupying the same physical space at the same time, we find it hard to imagine God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit all being one, yet being three.

God exists both with us and outside our understanding of time and space. He can be in 2 or 3 places and everywhere all at once. Don't try to figure out the logistics of it, just believe it.

Christ is the only way to God. Two divergent views cannot both be right. There is absolute truth, and Christ is IT.

God bless y'all.

The Holy Trinity is probably one of the greatest mysteries that humankind will never fully understand. We have God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. They are not three different modes or personalities; they are three separate, individual persons, but all of the same “substance”, if you will. They are each equally God and all three are one God. We know this from scripture.

Think about this: we know that only God can forgive sins, and only God can judge us. If Jesus were not God the Son, then how could He forgive us and be our judge?

Jesus the man was talking to God. He is the incarnation of God in the flesh but He also had a human body and was tempted in every point as every man is.

The incarnation has never been fully explained by anyone because it goes beyond logic and human intellect. That is why Christianity is a walk of faith. God shows us what we need for salvation, and then that must be apprehended by faith as well.

If everything were laid out logically then faith would not be a part of the Christian experience. When we exercise faith in God for salvation He reveals Himself to us and forgives us and gives us assurance of eternal life. It is supernatural and beyond the scope of human rationale.

Jesus is God! Jesus could have forgiven them (us), but His prayer is an example for us. Throughout Jesus' life and ministry He did many wondrous things He raised people back from the dead, He healed hundreds of people, He calmed the sea, etc. But His disciples didn't ask Him to teach them to heal people, instead they asked Him to teach them to pray. This is why the Lord's prayer is included in the Bible. The prayer Jesus prayed on the cross is, like the Lord's prayer, to be an example for us to follow. We are to live just as He died, we are to sacrifice our own desires in order to bless the Lord and love others in the beautiful way that Christ loves us, we are to forgive those who wrong us. Latter in the New Testament the first martyr, a young guy named Stephen, prays a very similar prayer to the one Jesus prays on the cross, the supernatural love and forgiveness with which He prays could only be learned from the Divine Lover of our souls, Jesus Christ. The prayer of forgiveness and love that Jesus prays on the cross does not make Him less divine, but instead reveals an intimate connection with heaven.

God Bless!

jesus never claimed to be god. never never. it was the council of nicaea presided by a pagan roman emperor that brought the clergy together to come up with certain nomenclatures. trinity, jesus is god etc was all coined during this council. so u must differentiate the truth from the absolute truth. it has been the norm fr those days till today. the clergy sure twist the stories around. investigate and get the truth

The idea that Jesus and God are one and the same doesn't make sense because its not sensible. Let me get this right. God came down in human form ,took on a different identity, then Jesus healed people in God's name, then Jesus prayed to God as Jesus and asked God for guidance, then God aka Jesus was crucified because God demanded His only begotten son,Jesus, himself be killed and all the while Jesus is praying to God, himself . This is crazy. Big time.

Which atheist "place"? some atheist have not got faith in God, and don't have faith that Jesus became a historic parent (fictional character). different atheists who have not got faith in God, have faith that Jesus became a historic parent (assuming Josephus's/Tacitus'/Lucian account is a minimum of partly real), yet extra of a cult chief. btw, what challenge did you coach in college? you're too sensible for this place.

All of the bible references people use to claim that Jesus was God in the flesh, IMO have been misunderstood. Jesus was truly a holy man, in likeness to God, because he was pure in heart and never sinned and was obedient through out his entire life. He was not God, his strength, miracles, humility, and love came from God the Father.

why do you question God? but ne ways Jesus is not God. God is God Jesus is Jesus and the Holy Spirit is the Holy Spirit. Jesus had to die so that we could live in a sinful world but be able;e to ask for his forgiveness.

Because Jesus had given up his independent use of his divinity. He was speaking and acting out of his human-ness during his death.
Phillipians 2 :5-8:
5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

6
Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
