My male cat that I have had since he was 2 months old, has started peeing a pooping on the carpet. I have tried everything that I know to get him to stop...to no avail. I've tried shampooing the area with pet stain removers, white vinegar, industrial strength carpet shampoo. He still goes to the same spot. We even tried blocking off the area. He goes beside the block. *sigh* What next?? He is healthy. I tried changing litter and bought a new box as well.

OK..here is an update. The vet says he is fine as far as health.
We shampooed the carpet again last night. Also moved furniture around. There is a futon there now. I also took the cover off of the litter box. (he is a big cat, although that never bothered him before). So now we are just waiting to see what is going to happen.

It is unlikely that your 12 year old cat will stop this activity. It is rather common in older male cats. He is not being bad...it's Mother Nature's doing. When you ask what he might do next, you won't like the answer: he may begin "spraying" in other areas to mark his territory.
Be patient as long as you can tolerate his activity. Best Wishes.

Even if he seems healthy, call the vet. Get him tested for a bladder infection or something like that.
Also, buy this stuff called FeliWay. It's a synthetic phermone that emulates the phermones they have in their cheeks, at the base of their whiskers. If the area is clean, and you spray this there, he may interpret that he has marked that area with his face and therefore will not go to the bathroom there. Also, put a little dish there and occasionally feed him treats in that area. Cats don't 'go' where they eat.
Did you change the litter you were using in his box? That could have created an aversion. Or if it's noisy or a lot of traffic or something happening near his box that's making him averse to using it. He may not feel safe for some reason.
Good luck - don't give up on 'em yet.

Here's a tip I've picked up: Put rocks in a soda can and set it sideways in that spot so that when he goes to pee there, he bumps it. It'll make a noise that he absolutely hates, and hopefully he'll come to assosiate that spot with the awful sound.
You've already tried vinegar, but there are some other smells that cats absolutely hate you could try, but I'm not sure of anything.
Also try a spray bottle whenever he tries to go there.
If all else fails... Put his litter box in that spot =P

Our female cat does the same (she's using the fire place mantel) she is 16 this fall - also had her since a baby.
I tried changing the litter every two days helps
but it's a nightmare - when your husband 'dislikes' the cat and now this -
I don't have much advice just that you aren't alone - call your vet and ask them -

ummm thats never happened with Tigger ummm maybe u should get a pet carrier or get a cat pin and keep him in it for maybe a week and make sure that u have food and water and a clean litter box in it and see if he will use the litter box.
write back and tell me if that works =-)

www.zeroodor.com has some EXCELLENT odor removing spray. I don't know is there something wrong with your cat? Sounds like he has something going on....He just started doing it, so maybe he has a health problem? also, they usually don't like sticky tape, so maybe a little tape over a piece of foil (so it doesn't get on the carpet), around the box?

I just bought my cats a new litter box that is enclosed and one of my cats is to scared to use it so he has been going in the floor. have you moved his litter box lately? sometimes when you move it it can confuse them and some cats are scared to be in an enclosed area.
