If you are not handicapped you have no business parking in the handicapped space. What would you use for your defense? Just be a man, admit you were a jerk by parking in the handicapped space and pay the fine.
PS: I'm handicapped and don't have any tolerance for people who do this.

You can probably just mail in the fine, but when you go to court, always plead innocent. You do not need a lawyer! Pleading innocent gives the judge latitude to be lenient, and offers you the chance to explain mitigating circumstances; while if you plead guilty, guilty it is!!!

If you were parked in the space without a permit, you are and should plead guilty. Handicap spaces are there for a reason, not your convenience.

It's not a moving violation so you should not be required to appear in court. Your ticket should give this info. It probably has a court date if you wish to deny the charge. It should also give the amount of the ticket you can mail or take to the place of payment.

PLEADING GUILTY OR INNOCENT WILL NOT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE AT ALL.
YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY THE FINE AND THERE IS NO WAY TO GET OUT OF IT.
PLUS THE JUDGE IS GOING TO READ YOU THE RIOT ACT AND HE MAY ALSO IMPOSE ADDITIONAL DAMAGES FOR THIS VIOLATION.

That's not a moving violation so it should not affect your insurance.
Should you plead not guilty, you then need an attorney for a jury trial.
I wouldn't do it.
