Why do you think the South is such a mess? Why do you think it's religions are so insane? I guess I really don't get what the real point of your question is, other than making assumptions and being offensive. You are very naive to believe that everyone in the South is an ignorant blindly following Bible thumper. Yes, many people value their religious upbringing, but we're not a bunch of brain dead hillbillies that will let any religious beliefs "deteriorate our society." What deterioration are you even talking about!?

We are doing fine down here in the south United States called Texas. I do believe we say, "Houston, we've got a problem." Sounds like the South solves problems, what do you do? The Lord is the bedrock of my outlook on life and I have great hope. Don't mess with Texas. Our society will do fine. You are listening to rumors and spreading gossip. God Bless Texas and the Baptist, Methodist and Pentecostal churches. If there is anything wrong with Texas, we'll fix it!!!

Yankee, you need to go to the South and experience it first hand. It is not cool to be a bigot. The South is the least messed up part of the country. When you make a biased judgement without having any good solid fundamental evidence to base it on that is called prejudice.
Also Baptists, Pentecostals and Methodists, as well as the the Lutherans, Presbyterians, UCC, Unitarians, Roman Catholics, Episcopalians, Orthodox, all the other Christian groups, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, nihilists, atheists, Wiccans and anyone else who lives in the South find your remarks absolutely and definitely offensive.
I suggest you either go South and learn the truth or crawl back under your rock.

I'm from the south. I live in central Louisiana. Pentecostalism is a big part of my family heritage. In fact, there's 5 Pentecostal preachers in my family. Although, I don't practice the religion, I can't help but acknowledge the fact that it could be why my entire family is so close. You can't beat their worship & praise services and my entire family is so musically inclined. I'm also glad my father raised us in a church with values and we shared a closeness with the other children in our church. Although I don't agree with the strict doctrine, it certainly hasn't hurt me. In fact, most of the teachings has helped me. And I don't see the "Munsons" or our clan ever deteriorating. We are what we are. Good luck. 2D

I disagree, because all regions of this planet have a belief system and religion. Does that mean they are going to deteriorate? Nope. The south is mess because inadequate funding from the government , limited resources, and improper guidance . Find ways to the help instead trying to make accusations and sound ethnocentric. Is the North going to deteriorate because of their lack of religion and personal manners or common decency for their fellow man? Nope. I am proud to be from "Down Home". The air is cleaner, the people are nicer , and we are beautiful.

I'm wondering if you've ever lived in the south. If not, what makes you so authoritative as to call it a "mess"? If so, then what is your basis of calling it a "mess". I personally love the south, great food, friendly people, uhhh...did I mention great food?
I do agree that religion is the root of most evil, but it's definately not limited to just the south!

What is it about the South that makes it the most "messed up" region in the United States?
Nothing!
The US, as a whole, is messed up.
Religion has nothing to do with it.

No, not from religion.
Most likely, it is the materialism that has been propagated by the big businesses, which the government encourages because we are a consumer-driven economy.
But, what happens when the desire for things is created, then the ability to attain these things is denied?

The south is such a mess like you just said. It is because of super zealots that try and force their views and lifestyle on everyone. America has dug its own grave allowing the government to be run with people like this. I say good riddance. I left that hell hole of a country because of all that.
