GC means General Classification - or, the overall results tabulated at the end of every stage. A GC contender is one who could win the race overall.

There are many races within the race at the Tour de France. There is the points or sprinters green jersey. There is the polka-odt climbers jersey. There is the white jersey for the best young rider. And of course there are stage wins each day. Each team places a different level of importance on each. GC is the overall win. It is the race for the yellow jersey or the lowest cumulative time on each stage.
