I have an appointment with my dentist tomorrow, but I didn't clear it with my boss to leave early- it usually isn't a problem. Now, of course, I see I am scheduled for a meeting when I wanted to leave. Should I call in saying it is a dental emergency like a broken tooth? I do have a toothache, but my boss is the type to tell you to come in anyway, she doesn't have anyone to fill in for you (even though she can always find SOMEONE). Anyway, I need a good plausible tooth excuse to make my need to be out of the office more urgent. Any ideas?

Breaking a tooth can cause discomfort but generally is not an emergency. Say you lost a crown. Thats HUGE. When a crown falls off the other teeth around it can shift so its imperative to get to the dentist and have it recemented. If you go without a crown for even a short amount of time the other teeth will start to move and you will wind up needing a whole new crown (and insurance companies wont pay for a new one but once every 5 years or longer). And rest assured that your boss cannot verify the reason why you seen the dentist.

I would go with the toothache. Say your tooth is hurting so bad that you can't talk right (in a "i'm hurting" voice, of course). A broken tooth, in my opinion, would not be a good excuse. You have to be in pain to make it good.

I had a boss like that. Chapped my hide. What someone said above is right, she's not your mommy. Go get your tooth fixed and she can deal with it. I guarantee your boss wouldn't come in if her own tooth was broken and hurting.

I'd keep the appointment unless you know the DDS could change it slightly - if you are in pain/discomfort this tooth matters. Just let your boss know you tried to change it -
and couldn't - sometimes life takes over a job -

feel better

If she text back the next day saying she was sick then maybe the drugs/alcohol you supplied her was starting to wear off and she came to her senses. And once she was clear headed, she now wants nothing to do with you. Could that be it?? Either that or she had second thoughts and decided that you were not for her, but needed time at first to think about it.

You don't need to explain. Just say you broke a tooth and need it fixed and show her your appointment card and you are out of there.

your boss isn't your mommy, you don't need her permission to care for your health. Simply tell her you broke a tooth and are getting it fixed, so you won't be available for that day. Your boss is supposedly a grown up person and can deal with it, that is her job after all.

Just say the pain from the broken tooth is unbearable, pretty much making you useless at work, much less a meeting.

I'd be careful. If you say you broke your tooth, she may require you to bring her proof. I'd tell her it hurts like hell and you THINK you might've cracked or broken it and you need to see your dentist right away.
