The latest, and some would say the best treatment, is spinal decompression. It is non surgical, and it works. You could also try a series of back stretches, and a few exercises to firm up your stomach area, as this is key to back health. Here's a link. I know back pain, that is for sure.

You might try pelvic tilts upon waking. You try to angle your pelvis upwards while lying on your back, hold it for a few seconds then slowly relax.[Feels like the start of a sit up.]
This will help stretch out your lower spinal column and relieve nerve pinches in that area.
You may want to change the mattress your using also.(softer maybe?)
Definitely consult a doctor if the pains persist.

Your age doesn't matter. Any pain that involves your back and or legs needs medical attention. You may have a pinched nerve in your spine or the onset of arthritis or both.

because all you are doing is bending, you should have someone give you a rubdown and then take a shower and stretch your back and legs before you start the yardwork.

Your getting older, but try visiting a chiropractor on a regular basis! Also, start back on a regular excercise routine.
