I've been golfing now for about eight months and my hadicap is 20 (par 72). My wife bought me some Jack Nicholas golden bear clubs and I love them ( I shot a 82 on a par 70 course over the weekend). I'm told that I have a really good game for someone just starting to play and should look into it seriously. However, I'm 6'9 and I'm told to get clubs that would fit my height and stop my back from hurting. Where do I go and what should I do? Will this mess my hadicap up?

When changing equipment there is always an adjustment period which will most likely affect your scoring. At 6'9 you would probably need something custom fit. Ping has a nice set up for custom club fitting I would check your local golf retailer for getting fit for some clubs.

almost any golf store will custom fit clubs for you. It sounds fancy but there is not much too it, they measure your height (more specifically they measure how far your hands are from the ground when you stand naturally) and they will have you take some swings and measure the angle at which you hit the ball and the speed of your swing.

Then they select the right shaft stiffness for your swing speed, the correct head angle, and the correct length and make the clubs. Its not very much more expensive than just buying clubs off the shelf and you will greatly improve your game. Since you are 6'9" I'd bet that your off-the-shelf clubs are too short and are costing you strokes.

I highly recommend looking for a small golf store, not a huge national chain or a pro-shop at a course, in my opinion you will get better service, the same club quality, and a better price.

your handicap is very good for a beginner and custom clubs would probably help you even more. Heck, your handicap is pretty good for anyone regardless of experience.

If you feel uncomfortable with the clubs, having it fitted to your height will benefit you. Go t your pro shop and have them fit you, it is advisable to get a 2nd opinion. Ask a pro for advice.
During the period where you are trying to get the feel of the new shafts, you might experience a different yardage from your previous club specs. Changes would normally be that your yardages will be a bit longer.

Don't worry your handicap will not really be messed up. remember, 40% of your score comes from around the green and on the putting green

so here is the thing...one of my best friend and golf buddies is 6'9'' as well...and he has longer shafted clubs...but his shots suffer greatly in the lower irons and drive shots, probably because the shafts are too long for the speed of his swing...he is 33 so he is swinging hard...

yet he does well with his higher irons...from about his 7 irons on up he is a great player...if he played regular clubs he would probably suffer from back pains...so its really a gamble on lengthening your clubs, cause you might render them to flexible for the longer length...

fortunatly for you, you can go to a golf galaxy or pro shop and have someone spend some good honest time with you...making sure your getting that happy medium between length and flex...

good luck

I agree with the other folks who suggest you should take those clubs to a pro who will fit them for your physical characteristics. At 6'9", I doubt a set of clubs bought off the rack are matched for your height. The pro will probably use extensions to increase the shaft length since you're so tall and probably adjust the lie angle.

Defiantly get custom clubs....and the beauty of that is that you can buy brand name clubs. They help so much...I started golfing at 13 and had wilson starter set and shot consistently in the upper 90s. then i went out and got brand name clubs and they make such a difference. I'm now 15 and a 11 handicap

My best advise is to contact a PGA Professional in your area. He or she can custom fit clubs and have them built for you. This is no more expensive than buying them off the rack at a local golf superstore.
