Has anybody tried, and got decent results from, the TV advertised 'Bowflex' multigym thing? 20 mins a day , 3 times a week, sounds too good to be true (although I hope it is!).

I know someone who used Bowflex and got good results, but you could get equally good results with using a system like "The Firm" program using the aerobic step with dumbbells if you are willing to commit to three days per week for a lot less money.

I have a Bowflex and I really like it, but don't be fooled by that 20 minutes a day/3 times a week deal. You know how that works? You cut your calories way down and keep cutting them for six weeks, so by the time you get to the bottom you're at starvation level. You also increase your water intake, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but there is such a thing as drinking too much water.

Here's the problem: The Bowflex plan promises quick weight loss, and it does deliver in many cases, but as soon as you go back to your "old" eating habits you put the weight back on -- usually with interest. If you want to lose the weight and keep it off, you have to make permanent changes in your eating and exercise habits. Having a Bowflex in your home may be a good way to make permanent changes in your exercise habits, but don't look at it as the Holy Grail of weight loss. Your diet will make you or break you. You're really better off changing your eating and exercise routine gradually as opposed to a drastic overhaul. Yes, it'll take you longer to lose the weight, but by developing better habits along the way your chances of losing all that weight and keeping it off are EXCELLENT.

The Bowflex is a good machine, but not better then a gym, I only say this because people get it and think it's some magical machine.
You will only get what you put in, but it is versatile enough to give you a full body workout. I suggest before you buy it that you seriously think on whether you will you use it or if it will end up with the other amazing machine the treadmill in the corner.
My personal advice would be get a gym pass for 6 months and if you really use that and decide that you want something compact for at home, then get it. They arn't cheap but they are worth it if your serious.
