I tried to stop for years then just gave up. Its too much hassle to stop. There's special fluid you can put on your nails to make them taste disgusting, however.

As an on-off lifelong nailbiter myself, you have my sympathies! Nail biting can be due to periods of stress, nervousness, hunger or boredom. It's medical name is 'Chronic Onychophagia'. There are currently many forms of treatment.
Behavioural therapy - this is habit reversal training and aims to 'unlearn' the habit and to replace it with a more constructive habit or response. It aims to identify and eliminate the stimulus or trigger.
Medication - some anti-depressants and mild anti-psychoticdrugs have been used (nail biting is not a psychosis).
Aversion therapy - coating the nails with bad tasting substance, rubber band 'ping' therapy (you wear an elastic band around your wrist and when you feel the urge to bite, you snap the elastic against your skin), chewing gum (sugarfree) can also help.
Sometimes only pure willpower can work. If you are so sick of having ugly hands that you just want to hide all the time, this can be a reason to say 'enough is enough'.
Regular manicures can also help - nice hands and nails leads to a postive self image. Having nail extensions can help to stop the biting/hate myself/biting vicious cycle. Nail technicians are used to helping chronic nail biters!
Keeping your hands occupied - get a hobby, especially good if your hands get dirty - who want's to chew dirty nails?
Drink a glass of water - it could be that you are subconciously thirsty or hungry (but feeling hungry for no reason is often caused by thirst so try water first!).
The more you feel bad about it, the more likely you are to chew. Just relax, it is something that you can change. Ask your friends and family to gently remind you if they see you biting, most of the time we don't realise that we are doing it.
Imagine your hands with nice smooth, shiny, unbitten fingernails and take each day at a time. You'll be suprised how quickly you will see those nice nails start to appear. When they start to grow, keep your nails filed short as this encourages strong nails, and use a moisturising hand cream to soften the damaged cuticles.
You are not alone. Good luck.

Firstly, to put anything on the nails that have been bitten down, will sting and be really painful as it will be soaking into the skin.

I ironically stopped this after reading Pual Mckenna's Book,: can your life in seven days. And listened ot the CD that comes with it, twice a day, morning and then night. After that single week. I stopepd biting my nails and were surprisingly strong and solid. They is always time to stop, and you will feel a lot better about it.

As an afterthought, biting nails is seen as eating the self, it can be through stress, nervousness or inner anger, but it can also be about a part of yourself that you do not like. Try the book and CD, I promsie it will make a difference.

Get some Bitter Alloes from the chemist. You'll never bite them again or if you do, you will regret it.

If you don't amputate your fingers, then try wearing gloves whenever possible. It broke the cycle of my nail chewing. I now have really nice nails that I can tap on the table to irritate people!!!!!
