She does not nap during the day ( she has too much energy for that! )
I have tried using the 'SLEEP FAIRY' ( if she is good and stays in bed then the sleep fairy visits and leaves money or sweets) I am at wits end.

I hope someone comes up with good ideas as she's my five year old too!

there is no miracle cure, a good bedtime routine is essential! start it early, about 6-6.30pm make sure that you keep her informed of the time as well, like a countdown, then it is never a surprise. first have some'quiet play' time, i.e nothing to get excited about (colouring usually works) then bath time (try one of the lavender bubble baths, johnsons have a good one). then into bed for story and cuddle time, during all of this, there should be no excitment or shouting ( hard I know!) if your child comes out, take her back, without saying a word, more stimulating conversation at this time will only serve your childs purpose (usually attention!) put her back as many times as it takes, and although it may seem tough, after a few nights you should get results and because you started early, even if it takes hours, you will still be getting an earlier night than at present!!

If she is napping during the day cut out the naps. 1 to 2 hours before bedtime do quiet acctivities read her a soothing story after her bath, keep all distractions at a minimum tv off or on low quiet voices and when you put her to bed try to rub her face or back really gentle.

Make sure she doesn't have any sugar (candy, sweet tea, coke products, etc) after 4 or 5 pm at the latest. Try to feed her 1-2 hours or so before bedtime. Maybe have her take a bath before bed too. Then put her to sleep and tell her that she has to go to sleep, no playing, no coming out of her room, nothing. If she comes out of her room, send her straight back to bed. If she gets up again, tell her to go straight to bed and that you will not tell her again and that she'll get a smack if she doesn't stay in bed. The 3rd time she comes out, smack her butt and send her to bed, telling her she is not allowed to get up until the morning. You may have to do this a few times, but she'll eventually stay in bed (it may take her a while to wind down to sleep, but she'll get to sleep faster if she's in her dark room in bed. It's worked with myself and with my younger brothers and sister (I'm the oldest of 4, the youngest is 3). Worth a shot.

All the answers so far are great. What you might want to add as well, when it does come time for bed, put 3 pennies (or any other coins) outside her bedroom door. (Of course show her) and let her now that each time she comes out of her room (For silly reasons) you will take one away, whatever is left over in the morning, will go into her bank, and she can save up to buy something special. We did this with our kids, but before bed,we made sure they went to the bathroom and such.

Get her up earlier in the mornings.

No naps during the day.

No sugar or soda after 5pm.

Run her around the block a few times to tire her out.

Once she's been put into bed, she can't get out of it until morning. Granted, if she needs to go to the bathroom or get a drink, except if she's just using that as an excuse.....

Does she take a nap? If so, when? If she's sleeping for 2 or 3 hours at five or six o'clock in the evening, then it would make sense that she cannot sleep.
