What is this illness?

When I read stories about life in the 1800's I often read about people dieing from "consumption" what is this "consumption" I often read about?

Tuberculosis. It was called consumption because the disease seemed to "consume" the victim as they lost weight when the disease progressed.

In the past, tuberculosis was called consumption, because it seemed to consume people from within, with a bloody cough, fever, pallor, and long relentless wasting.
