My son didn't like the spoon either. He loved the toddler fork though. As a matter of a fact, he has only been using his spoon correctly for about 3 months now, where as the fork, he had mastered by 15 months. Go figure! He is 2 years old. All kids are different and learn at different times! Don't sweat it mom!

Patience Momma !
Eating with utensils will come in time --the babies own time . Just let the little fella have the spoon available. If you get tired of picking it up--- just pick it up once and at the next meal make it available again.
Baby will soon learn that it is not so much fun to see Momma pick it up just once. At the same time it will slowly become apparent that the spoon and food go together.

At 13 months try giving him a spoon and using one yourself to supplement. They really don't get much in their mouths initially. Have him practice with foods such as yogurt, pudding, mashed potatoes, etc. that will stick to the spoon better--he'll be encouraged by his success at ending up with something in his mouth. Veggies that are whole (ie. peas) and meats will be frustrating (they'll fall off easily), so do allow him to still use his little fingers on those for a while.

Yeah, he is too young for feeding himself with any utensils.
Of course he is throwing the spoon on the floor, he thinks its a toy.

Funny, my daughter is 18 months old and still prefers to eat with one hand while holding the spoon in her other hand. Oh well - at least she can feed herself, I guess the process just goes faster for her if she uses her fingers. At 13 months they won't be pros at utensils - just keep giving the spoon to him - he will get the hang of it.

Right now they want to feed themselves but a spoon isn't in their mind. Let him eat with his hands, it's messy but it is how they learn. When he can hold and apply pressure with a crayon , he'll be ready to spoon feed himself.

Keep offering it to him, eventually he will catch on. Eating together is a great learning tool, so always sit down next to him and eat your meals together. The more he sees you eating with utensils the more willing he will be to try it himself.

At this age it is perfectly normal to eat with their fingers. He will catch on eventually, patience mom.
