One that's well socialized and enjoys people.

No cat should bite (kittens don't know they're biting, they're just putting their mouth on everything). A biting cat usually is in fear of it's life and doesn't think it has any other options, so if you push a cat that far, it's not the cat's fault. You'd need to not do the behavior that caused the cat to try to defend itself.

Cats are all different, but the ones who are handled a lot and who have experienced a lot are usually very mellow.

I tend to agree about the Ragdoll, but I've never owned one...

my most loving memories are with Birmans...they look like a cross beween a Siamese and a Himalayan...they are sweet, affectionate, very very silky and are doglike in wanting to be at the center of attention when strangers come over when the other cats are running and hiding...

many adoption places have volunteers and many don't know the difference between a Birman and a Himalayan or a Ragdoll or a Snowshoe...

most kitties give you love-bites which mean "do-more-of-this" or "stop-doing-this"...chomp-down biting means something completely different...if you have small children who will try to pick up the cat any-old-way, I'd go with a Ragdoll...otherwise I think Birmans are more affectionate and gorgeous...

One that's been raised inside and handled gently since birth. Usually those type will have an ad in your local paper "Free kittens to good home"

You can go to the shelter and interact with the cats and see if you bond with any. Of course, there's no way to know what the cat's background is, but usually shelter pets make good pets, and even if the cat is skittish of you at first (after all, he's been through quite the trauma being in a cage with other cats!) he'll get used to you quickly and will be a lovey dovey pet very soon!

The best cat that i have found is a himalayan or colorpoint cat. It's like a cross between a siamese and persian. It has the body and personality of a persian, but those beautiful markings of a siamese, as well as a bit more playful than your persian. Their eyes always stay blue and they stay small. You get a special kind of colorpoint that has long hair, but just short enough so that it doesn't get tangled. I have a boy and a girl. The one has chocolate points and the other almost blue-gray. They're great pets to start with. I hope you get one.

All cats have different personalities. I voulnteer at the Toronto Humane Society grooming the cats. I see all different types of cats. The black cats are very gentle and affectionate. Same with the black/white. I think the medium haired cats have the best personality. Also, it all depends all they we're raise when they we're kittens. If the kittens we're handle alot then they become wonderful pets.

Usually, Ragdoll cats are very lazy, and never bite or scratch. They are costly, but it's worth the money if your looking for a companion.

If I ever get another cat it will be one of the breeds that do that shed so severely.
