Mormon:
The name of an ancient prophet that lived on the American Continents. He was charged with abridging many many records into 1 smaller book. most of the Book of Mormon comes from his abridgment, so it was named after him.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints considers the Book of Mormon to be scripture just as the Bible is scripture. 20 years ago or so the church added to the title of the book so now it reads "The Book of Mormon Another Testament of Jesus Christ." Since it testifies of Christ and gives an account of the resurrected Savior visiting people on the American continent approx. 2000 years ago.
You will read the ever clever Mr Peepers give alternate realities to what I have stated -- but I suggest you pray and ask God what is true and let Him tell you rather than rely on us "Net-Rats"

"more good" is the more correct meaning of Mormon. But it's actually a name. "Mormons" believe that a prophet on the America continent named Mormon was one of the last true prophets of the area and compiled most of the writings of the prophets before him to one book, "The Book Of Mormon". it is because of the Book of Mormon the members of "the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints" (the church's official name) are "Mormons", although the name is very inaccurate.

According to who?
The Satanic Bible has Mormons as the followers of a god Mormo - the god of the living dead.
In Hong Kong, the word Mormon means "gates of Hell"
If you listen to the LDS church, then Mormon was a fellow that lived in North America.

Mormon is the name of a prophet of old. He helped in writing the Book of Mormon (along with othe prophets of God on the American continent)
Mormon was named after the land of Mormon. The Book of Mormon was named after the place not the man (Thanks for your question I learnt something new.) http://www.meridianmagazine.com/articles/040507mormon.html
Mormon -this name consists of the Egyptian-derived prefix Mor, meaning "Love", and the suffix mon, "firmly established."

Joseph Smith had clarified the meaning to a local newspaper editor about the meaning of Mormon. He said it meant "more good" and that it was not of Latin origin.

It is a completely fictional name created by the fertile if not slightly bent mind of young Joseph Smith. Later on, he attempted to contrive a meaning the the word as "More Good", but one needs to ask how did the English word "more" get defined centuries before the language was developed in Europe? It's certainly not Hebraic.
I think he was just pulling our leg.
