Because He had no sin. He was warning against pride.

When he said this - he was refering to those that cry out their prayers in public. These people doing this were basically extolling their virtues saying such things as: "I know that I am so worthy of your love because I did this and thus". These people were basically braging about their good deeds in public for public favor. When Jesus prayed, it was a prayer to thank his Heavenly Father. He never prayed to show off what he had done. In fact, he told most people for whom he did miracles not to tell others, but they invariably did. Those prayers he said in public -- The Lord's Prayer being the classic one -- were very humble.

Jesus was describing the jewish religious leaders who were making a great public spectacle of their purported zeal for God.
(Matthew 6:5) “Also, when YOU pray, YOU must not be as the hypocrites; because they like to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the broad ways to be visible to men. Truly I say to YOU, They are having their reward in full.

Jesus did not do this.

He didn't say that you couldn't pray in public. What he said is that if you are praying for the sole reason of being seen by others, to show off how holy you are, then you are praying for the wrong reasons.

Jesus said that because he was teaching people how to pray.
Remember he went into the wilderness for forty days and forty nights all alone where he met up with the devil, who tempted with all the riches he could desire if Jesus only serve him.
Jesus said get thee behind me Satan.

If you recall in the scriptures it also tells us that, when Jesus went into the garden of Gethsemane, even though he had all his disciples with him, he went to pray alone, when he returned the disciples were all asleep.

Oh ye men of little faith.

You are absolutely right about that. BUT... Jesus was referring specifically to the religious leaders who said long, public prayers just to make a grand show of piety. These that religious leaders were oppressing their people... demanding things that were not pat of the law... "teaching commands of men as doctrine".

I hope that helps you. Have a great day.

Jesus was making a point not to be showy - praying for the sake of being seen.

He means not to do it for show. It's OK to pray in public but if you're praying so to impress someone then you've sorta lost the point.

The question is not in being seen by others, but in being showy and proud.
