Yeah they can. It is a side effect. Most people don't even realize the side effects unless someone tells them. It actually depends if you ever have had anxiety though. If you've had anxiety it can actually make it worse.

I don't know what you are taking for a "pain-killer" so it is hard to say. Anxiety is fear of something so chronic pain itself can induce anxiety. Alcohol is a painkiller and was used as an anesthetic in the wild wild west and so was "biting a bullet". Both are inadequate as pain-killers and anxiety may follow their use. If you are taking a prescribed medication talk to your pharmacist or doctor about side effects. Aspirin is a pain killer but has few side effects.
