Nearly all of us have parted ways with a good friend because we (or they) have moved to a different city. We always say that we will stay in touch and/or visit, and say so with the best of intentions, but inevitably, those friendships seem to fall to the wayside. We go from frequent phone calls to infrequent phone calls, to a Christmas card, to sometimes nothing at all.

Usually, these people were very much a part of our everyday lives and routines, and within a relatively short period of time, they aren't on our radar at all anymore.

What are your thoughts on why we allow this to happen?

I think we do this because it's easier. Perhaps the relationship doesn't seem worth th effort anymore. I've done that with a few people, but it's been because I was able to see since moving far away from them, that the friendship wasn't real at all. So for me, the best thing I could do was to let them fall off my radar.

It's no longer possible to travel 10 minutes to their house with a six pack for watch a ball game.

It would take $1,000 round trip and three or four hours just to go airport to airport round trip for a day or two.

"Out of sight, out of mind". It is hard to keep track sometimes. But we can and do make new friends. I think mostly people are just too busy being busy. We need to slow down and enjoy this life before we can't.

The amazing thing about true friendship is that it dosn't matter.

You can go 15 years or more without being in contact with a good friend, and when you see them again, it's like you pick up the conversation where you'd left it.

It's something I find quite astounding.
