You dont need to wear them, but as all of the others have mentioned, It helps keep you stable and not slipping with tennis shoes. However, there is another reason you should wear golf shoes. Some courses require you have them on because with each step you take the spikes help to aerate the greens. This is a big help whether people know it or not to the greens crew. Probably the biggest reason to wear golf shoes is to keep the course you like to play on well managed.

When I first started playing, I didn't own a pair of golf shoes so I wore tennis shoes instead. I quickly found out why I needed golf shoes with spikes. When I wore tennis shoes during a morning round when there was dew on the grass, my feet would slip when I hit full shots......especially tee shots. The spikes help keep my feet anchored.

The real answer is that you don't. Like in any other sport, gear is developed in order to enhance your performance. In golf, when keeping a relatively still lower body is key in a golf swing, the spikes on the bottom of the shoes help to anchor you in the grass, bunker, on the green, wet grass, etc. Also, golf shoes are more sleek and comfortable while normally also being waterproof to help with the weather conditions. Golf shoes are not necessary but could provide another small advantage.

You don't. I've forgotten my shoes from time to time and ended up playing in my tennis shoes. As long as its dry its usually not a problem. The big advantage to today's golf shoes is really to older players (like myself). Most of the mid-range and better shoes have specially designed bracing to support the golf swing (as well as preventing you from slipping).
As we get older and less flexible we have a tendency to "roll" our weight to the outside of our back foot on the backswing making it more difficult to get back to the ball on the downswing. A good pair of golf shoes can help support this bracing somewhat. For the younger player though this is not as critical.

Because of work, I sometimes play very early while there is dew on the ground. The spikes help me keep my feet planted. Before the shoes, I have slipped on wet grass and twisted my knee. Other than that, I probably wouldn't have spent the money until my golf game was much better.

You don't. But lets say you are play in in rain or where the grass is wet. the spikes on the bottom prevent you from slipping, unlike sneakers.
