There should be an option on Mapquest that let's you avoid freeways. After you enter in your info look to the right hand side. There is a box that has choices. One says "avoid highways". However, these are all pretty much driving directions. I don't think there are walking/biking directions.

Mapquest, Google, Yahoo, and others give driving directions, while you want to back pack overland where there are no roads.
(a) Buy an atlas, or maps, which has maps other than, or in addition to the highways, such as topographical maps
(b) Use Google Earth to get map of where you are, or want to be
(c) If you are visiting some national park, they have maps like that with trails.
You need to learn how to read the map
* changes in elevations
* measure distance from point a to point b
* know how fast you can hike, jog, crawl, etc.
My links are to examples in USA.
There's lots more
There's similar stuff for other nations
Search Engines can help you find them

There are GPS units that can help you with trails. Or, you may get maps from the forest department, BLM offices or county maps. Other than that, unless you plan on traveling through buildings there is no reason why Mapquest does not work for you as aprevious post stated there are many options.
