GOOD question! I've always wondered as well why and HOW, for example, mass murderers and other horrendous offenders in prison or elsewhere can simply claim to have "found the Lord", and that is that- they're okay again, doesn't matter what they did in their past. I'm not saying that they're all insincere about having changing their ways, nor am I making a judgement- I just think most of them are full of shite. My guess is that religion is essentially a tool of the ruling class used to invoke fear in those who are not as powerful- "turn the other cheek", for example, essentially means don't revolt and defend yourself when those in power oppress you and "slap" you with one injustice after another. Really cracks me up to hear people like Bush and other powerful, evil, sinister, corrupt politicians, as well as televangelists, spew rhetoric and claim to be devout Christians and living the word of the Lord.

If you do that, you have not truly repented. Jesus said, "you must be born again." That means completely change and become a new person where you cannot stand sin because you love the Lord.
These "get out clauses" as you call them may get the person, "you called Lord, Lord, but I never knew you." If Jesus says that then the heart was never right to begin with. The Lord knows the heart. You can fool man, but you can't fool God.

The Christian religion offers people who have committed such sins a chance to be able to turn from those sins, stop committing them, and be able to become "good" people instead.
It does not allow people whioo commit such as sins, to come in and do a "ritual" for repentance or confession, and then go back out and continue to do the same thing.
Whenever Jesus extended his forgiveness to someone, there was a condition. They were to "go and sin no more". His forgiveness was intended to stop the sin in their lives, not to "excuse" them for it.
It is explained in I John 1:9, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness".
You sould also note that while a sin is forgiven, the consequences of that sin are not automatically removed. All through the Bible you will find people who, even after they "repented", still had to deal with the messes that their sins had caused. That is part of the "cleanse from unrighteousness" process.
what would you prefer? That God NOT change people so that they stop raping, murdering, pillaging, etc?

Real repentence is much more than just saying one is sorry. Resolving not to repeat the offense, paying restitution and obtaining forgiveness from the victim are also necessary components. Certainly in the case of murder, it's a bit difficult to obtain forgiveness from a dead person.

Absolutely not! It sounds like you don't know any true Christians.
If we repent of our sins does that mean that Christ is faithful and just to forgive? Yes! Does that mean that we can just sin to our little hearts content? NO!!
If someone is claiming that then I would question their salvation.
The Bible says "For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace. What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not!" Romans 6:14-15.

As long as we engage in sinful activity we pay the price right here on earth. . Sin brings its own punishment. There is nothing to gain in doing things that are wrong thinking we can repent at the end.

No. God will be the final judge as to what we did and where we go. Surely murder is the single worst sin there is, and surely most are sorry after killing someone. BUT, that does not mean they shouldn't be punished. saying that I am sorry, is only asking other humans to forgive me, whether or not God does is another story.
"God is angry with the wicked everyday."

Forgiveness for sin is not a license to sin. It seems some of the previous answerers have a wrong comprehension of Christianity.

You advance an exciting concern right here. i comprehend of many people, who have been into all styles of devious issues and practises merely before turning out to be a Christian. Had no longer God drawn them to Himself for a non secular relationship via Jesus and the Holy Spirit, this international may be a lots-lots worse place to stay in. in many circumstances, many non-believers forget to comprehend what loads of "now" Christians may be like interior the previous way of life. Many convicts have embraced Christianity and went directly to strengthen into medical doctors etc. probably, this amoral society of ours may be a killing container without Christianity instilling Christian ethical values into it. Love expressed to others ability do no longer harm nor homicide people yet do good to them, as an occasion.

The bible tells us we Just need to follow Jesus and we will go to heaven . There are however consequences for actions other than hell. For Instance, the bible tells us that if a man rapes a women he must give her father twenty pieces of silver.
