No!
I'm female & very active in sparring. Someone told me I should be wearing one to protect down there. The way cups are designed the edges are made to protect appendages coming out. The one time I tried it I got kicked in the groin (which LOL - had actually never happened before) and the edges of the cup bruised all around down there. It hurt to pee for a week! (sorry for the T.M.I.) It hurt soooo much worse then a normal kick to the groin would. It hurts when a girl gets kicked there, but nothing even remotely resembeling how much it hurts when you put plastic down there to protect it. Its just not shaped right.
I did try the female version b.t.w. ---- so doesn't work! They just don't seem to fit right. I'm thinking - probably designed for women by a man.

Depends on the martial art and how intense the sparring is. She will have to ask the instructor. Usually, if groin protection is needed for females, then the school will make it mandatory and probably provide supplies (or direct you to a martial arts supply).
For reasons that nremtohio mentioned, your friend shouldn't buy groin protection designed for males. I've been kicked "down there" (with toe) and trust me, it hurts. There are cups designed specifically for women; check out this link and scroll down for a couple of examples: http://www.orlandokuntao.com/master_frameset.html.
(They provide a link to the supplier, but when I clicked on it, the pictures didn't show up for some reason.)

I have had women students and fighters wear cups and supporters and I have had other women fighters who just wore a padded protective pantie under their attire and still others no protection at all. I think it is really more a thing of choice and what fits best and gives them good protection against low or errant kicks.
In my studio in some sparring sessions we do allow light kicks to the groin so I do encourage them to wear some kind of protection. The groin as a target is still allowed in some tournaments today and also is a potential target in any street situation so they practice targeting it and protecting it against low kicks for these reasons.

YES.
I'm a Sifu in Wing chun, (gung-fu). I will not let people spar unless they ware protective gear.
Women can get hurt if kicked in the groin! There are female joks... why do you think they make them. You can also ask your doctor what type of injuries can result from a kick.
+ your probably sparing with people who do not have full control of how hard and where they strike. Unless you spar with experienced Black belts and up.
Better to be safe then sorry.

No. Girls don't get hurt down there in the same way as guys; we might get bruised from a really hard kick, but we don't have the same equipment that makes guys fall over, screaming in pain. However, it is recommended (some places even require it) for girls to wear chest armor when sparring. A hard hit there HURTS, so it's worth it to be protected.

A cup is specifically designed to protect the males testicles from blunt force trauma. It would offer no protection to the womans privates, in fact it might cause more harm then good.
Consider this. A male wearing a cup receives a kick to the wedding tackle, the cup prevents a testicle from being crushed by redirecting the force of the kick along the lines of the cup and absorbing the pressure on the pelvic bone.
If a woman were to use the same device and recieve the same kick, due the placement of her vagina the cup might actually "dig in" to the vagina rather than redirect the pressure to the pelvic bone.
My suggestion is to seek out padded under-garments for your girlfriend and leave the athletic supporters (cups) to the ones with the stick and berries.

It's a personal choice, but I actually wear a hockey pelvic protector. It's soft, so it doesn't dig in to your skin like a cup does. There are a lot of nerves "down there," so it isn't a bad idea to have a little protection!

Yes. Female groin protection is commonly called a 'Jill'. It protects the pelvic bone and nerve groupings.
