i don't think they are fleas, she does not go outside, but she was laying on a piece of white paper and started scatching and little black specks were on the paper. there was no blood evident so this can't be fleas? what is this?

I agree - it sounds like flea eggs. Get her on some flea meds. Frontline or one of the other ones.

It's one of two things--either flea poop (not the fleas themselves) or the cat has been walking under columbine flowers (the black seeds are tiny and would look like that).

Put some in a drop of water and smush it, if it turns red, your cat needs to be treated with Advantage or Revolution for the fleas. If the black specks are hard and don't disintegrate in the water it's just flower seeds.

Sounds like fleas to ME.

It's a misconception that indoor cats cannot get fleas. Fleas can enter the house on a human or another animal and wait in the rug for the next animal/person to walk by.

Give her a good shampoo with flea shampoo and then comb her out with a flea comb. You may be quite surprised at what you get on the sheet you sit her on as you comb out all the dead fleas, droppings and flea eggs.

Comb her really completely and thoroughly!

Could be anything including fleas. Brush your cat thoroughly to remove any trace of the black specks and monitor the situation for a while. It could even be dirt from outside, she might have been lying in a plant or something.

Check for fleas it may be from their mess after bitting the cat.
Flea eggs are white and they will lay them near the shaft of the fur and the flea poop is black.

It sounds like flea poo. Often fleas are well hidden, and not so many, but their poo is there. Spray your cat with Frontline.

If the black specks are coming from around her ears, it could be ear mites. The residue from ear mites is best described as looking like finely ground coffee beans. Ear mites are easily treated by your vet!
