There's this on line prayer site (http://theopenprayer.com/) where people pray for all kinds of things but quite a few people pray to lose weight. Who believes that? shouldn't they rather just start jogging or swimming or cycling? or eat less? if you sat around thinking about losing weight all day its not gonna make you thin! God can do anything, I know, but I think they should pull their own weight around a bit as well!

More often I would say that they might try praying for the motivation, or the strength or if it's health reasons and they are not able to move around so well, then pray for an answer to lose the weight.

Sometimes it's a medical condition so too often you might be putting your foot in your mouth when you say..... pray for a treadmill or whatever... like it appears from your question.... that you think they are all lazy..... My mom has a thyroid problem and even with medication she'll never be fit... and I think it's wrong to assume ..... As for me??? I pray for motivation to go to the gym..... it works too!

Of course you can pray to lose weight. But at the same time you should exercise and go on an intelligent diet--lower servings, cut out sweets, drink eight glasses of water every day. Good luck to you, and be well, forever well.

Praying to lose weight is not a bad idea.

Depends on WHAT you are praying...

If you are asking God to miraculously melt off the pounds while you continue to overeat, never exercise, break the health and diet principles in the Bible, etc., then God will not do it. He has the right to answer prayer with a "No".

If they are praying for the wisdom, disciple, motivation, etc., to change their lifestyle so that they lose weight, then God will answer that prayer with a "yes". He will send information, helpers, teachers, friends, etc., accross their path to help them lose the weight.

If one were to fast, a common religious practice, while one prays and does both for a long enough period of time, one will definitely loose weight.

Your understanding is correct, however. It would be more effective to eat less, and exercise more.

God/religion often becomes an excuse for our excesses and failings (i.e, "it's god will that I couldn't do such and such", 'it's god's will that I am fat", etc.).

It would be perhaps better for each individual to seek his/her answers from within themselves, as well as to accept responsibility for their actions or inactions, especailly as waiting on "god' can take a very long time.

May it be well with you.

Perhaps you've heard of Martin Luther. He said, "Pray as if you can do nothing and God can do everything. Then live as if God can do nothing and you must do everything." I couldn't agree more. These folks should pray God's help for weight loss. Then they must get off their ample backsides and do something about it: use their minds to discover how to do it and use their hearts to get it done with resolve.

Sure, why not. You CAN talk to yourself about losing weight or you COULD get off your a$s and DO something about it! Diet, exercise...ever hear of those?

Remember, "god" is nothing more than a nonsense word made up to explain away the things we can't yet understand and prayer is nothing more than talking to yourself.
