Unless you have tons of money, and I mean tons. The North Shore is outrageously expensive. The south shore isn't as bad, but still pricey. The middle isn't as bad, but can have some bad parts (Uniondale, Hempstead, etc.).
One place that's nice on the North Shore is the Manorhaven section of Port Washington, if you are lucky you maybe able to get a home at around 750K (excellent for the North Shore). The School district is Port Washington and is excellent. Transport into NYC is good too, the Port Washington Branch of the LIRR doesn't go through Jamaica, which makes the commute a breeze.

I live in Bethpage, just on the Nassau/Suffolk border. Like most of LI, the house prices are through the roof. Our taxes used to be much cheaper than the average, but a really large company, Grumman, moved out. They were paying a huge chunck of the taxes and now we're catching up to the rest of Nassau County.
For affordability, if you go further east into Suffolk, you can do a bit better.

Nassau could be divided into three regions - South Shore, North Shore and Middle Shore. North Shore is more scenic, South Shore better beaches, and Middle Shore you could decide if you want to go to the North or South Shore.

Well, Baldwin was just names one of the top ten places to live in America by Money Magazine.... But, I grew up in Bellmore, which is on the south shore. There are great schools, lots to do, right near the beach. A town swimming center and park, and ice skating rink is close by. Also right near the LIRR which you can take into NYC. It's centrally located on long island, so you are 'close' to lots of things. Plenty of shopping, close to 4 malls. I think it is a great place to live. There are lots of churches, 2 movie theaters right in town, great restaurants...
Hope this help!

Check out http://www.hubbuzz.com. This site is great for finding an apartment and provides information like types of neighborhoods, price ranges, what's in the area, amenities, and convenience. I don't think it's available for the East yet but will be very shortly so check it out!
