Towards the end of the given DEROS, s/he will be given the option to put in for an extention in the current location only.
Of course, when the listing comes out (or the Dream Sheet is given), he/she can put the very same base or another base located within Europe for a short tour of 3 years (unaccompanied), or for a long tour accompanied.

It was easy when I was in, but that was 20 years ago when about half our forces were in Germany. It saved them the cost of a move.
However... it may not be a good idea.
Before extending in Germany for another three years, the servicemember should talk to the unit's Career Counselor about it. It's possible that another three years could interfere with some training assignment that is necessary to progress.
Just be sure to ask the right question.

Ipcot answer is the most probable. But like it was said, it's difficult. I had to jump through hoops and get my paperwork pushed all the way up to 1st perscom to extend for Italy even with the fact I was married. (the problem was that I got levied before the marriage went through in the "army" system) I've been in Italy for 8 years now (though 4 are reserve) So it IS possible. It just depends on how much you are willing to jump through hoops :-)

we were stationed in Mannheim in 2001 many people I knew had extended and my husband's replcement just extended to stay there another 3 yrs .
I think you can only extend twice there total of 6 yrs ..
You guys getting married and you wanna stay because of family being there? I understand alot of my German friends do that mostly because they have small children to get the money from the German govt..
I miss Germany would love to go back just to shop .
Good Luck and Congrads on future wedding!

It all depends on the Army. The soldier can put in for an extension, the commander may approve it and then it gets shot down by the Army. This may be because the soldier is needed elsewhere, or it may be because he is on orders. There will be no reason given if it is disapproved. The only thing he can do is submit the request. IF he is already on orders, then he will NOT be approved for an extension.

He needs to fill out paperwork for an IPCOT (in place consecutive overseas tour). Generally in Germany its a 1 year extension not a 3 year one. Also it is very difficult in Germany to get this approved.
