It's always easier to poke fun and call people names than it is to intelligently articulate your position. I don't agree with their non-belief, but I'd much rather read a thoughtful question from a non-believer than a joke or a one-liner containing the word "stupid." At least, you get something to make you think and as you know, iron sharpens iron.

I make jokes about a lot of stuff. Religion is a part of our society and has an effect on people. As such, it lends itself to humor. Humor is a way to expose the foibles of society. Look at how well politics lends itself to satire and parody.

It's easy to make fun of things you don't believe in or understand. It could be that they are showing fear...... Deep down they may be asking "What if...What if I'm wrong?"
Has my closed mind doomed me eternally?
I think that 9 times out of 10 if you find an atheist on there death bed, ( as with most people) it is a higher power that they turn to for forgiveness and comfort. It's easy in life to believe in goodness if you choose. Good and evil go hand in hand but why choose to stay on the dark side through life. I don't know about you, but personally I need something good to believe in!

I'm going to guess the reason you might make a joke about Scathach, Taliesin, Thor, Loki, and the like. When you don't believe in something, you can make fun of it. When you believe in something it is more serious to you and therefor not the basis of a joke.

What you don't believe in is the easiest target, particularly when it brings out what you believe to be the worst in people.
This shouldn't take a great leap of imagination. I'm surprised you didn't see it.

I do it because I'm on a mission to undo some of the damage done in the name of religion, in particular Christianity.

Religion itself is the joke. The other jokes are just spin offs.

and your point is...?
I know a joke about a fairy, a goblin and a werewolf but that doesn't mean I believe they exist.
I think you should re-read the bit in your Holy Book of the Talking Donkey about turning the other cheek.
