There were actually 2 demonstrations, one that was violent and one that was not. The violence was localized, the Thai realize that much of their income come from tourism.

Even the bombings on new years eve 2006 were designed to only harm Thai nationals at most. Stay within tourist areas and yes, the river market will be safe. Why?
The protest were only 10,000 in an area that has 6,000,000-8,000,000 is nothing.
If you see a group gathering walk the other way.

Bangkok is the safest city oin Earth. I go to Thailand all the time. I've been there (Thailand) for SARS, Tsunamis, Bird Flu, Coups, Bombings, and a host of other things...never had a bad day.
If the world were ending and the rest of the planet was in total chaos, Thailand would be the place to be. You wouldn't even know anyting was going on. Just sit back and relax and have another Singha, although I prefer Tiger Beer myself...
Good Luck!

I am in bangkok, and I didnt even know about the protests. I have been in thailand for 6 months now. I have been all over the world and this has got to be one of the least threatening places I have ever been. I have traveled thailand for the 6 months by myself the whole time. I am 5 foot 7 and weigh 130 lbs. I am 24 years old, and nobody has messed with me.

well, I too was in bkk during that time - and did not know of anything until I saw it on tv - - even amongst the people involved, i do not think there were any injuries.. Tailand is a very safe and friendly place - and to some of the above advice, I live off the beaten track and it is safer here than anywhere.. people here are farmers and barely concerned with politics - so, really, don't worry - just avoid protests, which should be very very very easy.. have fun!!

I live in Bangkok and didn't even know anything about the protest, so I would say it is safe. Remember, that anything can happen anywhere, so always be aware of that.

The clashes were very "localized". Protesters left Sanam Luang to make trouble outside Pha Prem's BKK residence.
BKK is a big cuty. You'll never notice anything if you don't come near the "troubled" locations.

I would suggest that you ask your question on the Message Board at Travelfish.org. This is a great website with up-to-the-minute knowledge (and answers) for travellers in south-east Asia. Also, check out today's official Australian travel advisory on Thailand.
