Big rv----Funny the news shows people killing people----I have never seen footage of God killing people. God is love. We are the killers.

Kj7-----So when Satan wanted to be "like the most high" you would not call that arrogance? When the woman was tempted Satan said "You shall become as Gods yourselves." You dont see how arrogance was a motivating factor? I believe in the doctrine of depravity by Augustus Strong, the same as you. But arrogance is the origin of sin. God says dont do it, and we say "Yes I will".

The Death Bunny------You must, if you want to consider the views of Christianity, and to be open minded you should. You must look at the teachings of Christ himself, who has nothing to say of what to wear, or what to eat. He speaks of a condition of love and compassion that is to be maintained in your heart. You must seek the very best education in the Bible. I will not leave you to look for that yourself---try Berachah church, in Houston Texas--you can find it on the internet. The pastor has three degrees from the top seminary schools and even Nasa scientists attend there, due to the depth and incredible attention to study that is found in the sermons there. You will get original language training and it is all free. I pray you will at least try, it will not hurt to try.

Matthew T---the prodigal son wanted his inheritance so that he could go and spend it. It was not independence, it was more that he thought he knew what was better for him, than his father did, and that is of course arrogance. The part about the inheritance gives it away. True independence would not want inheritance but would turn its nose up. When he came to his senses he said "In my Father's house." He still regarded him as Father, and never questioned the relationship, and was even counting on his father's compassion. Why would you want to be independent of a compassionate father? He wanted to do as he wanted, not be independent. He moved to the far off country so his father could not see what he was doing.

Death Bunny to simply dismiss the knowledge of someone else, without examining the facts they present is arrogance. I care enough to provide you with a possible source of information. I have examined the information and am not a blind follower.
Will you?

I believe and have heard it said that the root of all sin is pride. Every time we sin, if we examine it deeper and deeper the root is pride. Of course pride is another word for arrogance.
Whether it be hurt feelings - how dare they?
or I'll show them who's better - I won't feel degraded
We tend to think we 'deserve better' or 'know more' etc.
We think more highly of ourselves than we ought to. Anybody who thinks he is somebody, "Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall."

Not entirely. A lot of my sin originates in my voracious sexual appetites as well as other of my petty human indulgences -- but arrogance is right in there with the rest of them !
I try to maintain that my will remain secondary to God's will in my life however -- and I do curse and swear entirely too much -- and that is pure arrogance.

assuming that there is a god,
he makes lots of contradicting rules
he gives different advice to different people
I mean, am I allowed to wear mixed fibre clothing? or is that worthyy of the death penalty?
am I allowed to eat prawn salad? or is that directly equivalent (to'evah) to homosexual intercourse?
Am I allowed to own slaves?
So, who do i turn to to find out the 'Expressed will of god"?
you?
my local Imam?
my local Rabbi?
Gordon B. Hinckley?
Is it arrogant to be confused?
{edit} so your advice is to consult someone - who is educated (educated by who?) to *interpret* the will of god.
A - why should I trust anyones interpretation?
B- For a pastor (or whoever) to claim that he has some knowledge of what god truly wants, and which of his rules we can safely throw away or ignore..... Isn't that supremely arrogant?
{edit 2}
"Death Bunny to simply dismiss the knowledge of someone else, without examining the facts they present is arrogance."
I have examined several belief systems. I have been a member of 2 major religions in my (40 + yrs) life, both Christian.
As a European, Christianity was the major religious influence in my upbringing, but I give no precedence to that mythology over any other belief system.
Examining *yet another* version/interpretation of that mythology - especially one from a deep-south- bible-belt- god is-an-american version of Christianity does not insipre me
"I... am not a blind follower."
:-) I will have to accept your word on that.
I am pretty sure that if you had been born in (for example) iraq, you'd be just as vehement in your apologetics for Islam.
If you hade been born in India, you'd be telling everyone about Krishna's will

No, I disagree. We do not have a will that surpasses God's. His decrees are from before the foundations of the world, and he knew us before we were born. Sin does not come from arrogance, it comes from a fallen nature and a total inability to look to God for salvation.

Well, I can't really comment on the causes of sin, because my beliefs don't include the concept of 'sin', so I don't sin, and nor does anyone else.
But as for 'superimposing our will over the will of God'; that's not possible.I am part of God; you are part of God. My will, and yours, is God's will.
Everything that occurs in creation IS the will of God; if God doesn't 'will' it, it CANNOT happen.
That's what 'omnipotence' means....

I think sin comes from our desire to be independent of God; to be free of his authority over us. See the parable of the prodigal son.
"Why would you want to be independent of a compassionate father?" For the same reason we want to be independent of our heavenly Father. Because a father is not just compassionate but is also an authority and judge over us.
"He wanted to do as he wanted, not be independent." I think those two are one in the same.

Jesus teaches that we can sin even with a thought, so no, arrogance is a applied trait, not an action.

All sin comes from disobedience, not arrogance. Sin is simply a choice between believing (and following) Jesus and choosing not to.

I don't believe in the notion of sin, so your whole argument falls apart. We're never going to find common ground on this one, and thus we disagree.
Take care,
