My Dad is about to go to work in Korea. Will a UK/Europe GSM mobile phone work over there? I know UK uses GSM 900/1800 and USA uses GSM1900, but what does Korea use? I know when I was there in 1999 my 900/1800 Nokia didn't work...

No, your phone will not work here..stilll.
As you noticed in 1999, Korea is on a different cell phone system.. than the rest of the entire world apparently. When I first moved here, I could not accept this as fact. In didn't make sense.. why would it be like this?
Then, just last year, when the North threw up their 1st missile, everyone freaked out. (by everyone, I mean myself and the other non-Koreans living here for work, at the foreign school)
And the security staff at our companies explained to us that in an emergency situation, the KOrean government will cut the signal for cell phones across the South and they will be useless..
Gee, that's comforting, considering that most Koreans do not even have land lines anymore.
But somehow, the system works for them.My friends are still non-believers, and insist on bringing their cells and Blackberries when they visit.. and we just laugh at them.
(Yes, I know oyu are important doctor and need your cell but Korea doesn't care)
And here's the kicker:
Non-Korean, non-residents can NOT get a temporary cell to use while they are here. Even if your company sponsors it. We have businessmen come for 6 months and they can only use company phones. (restricted international access)

Dawn V, I respect almost all your answer but I think you might be a little off on this one.

Some US providers do work in South Korea. I have Sprint I was there last month and roaming.

You can also rent phone in South Korea I was there and I did it. I even used it for calling home. (US).

To answers the question if your GSM phone will work in Korea try the above link. It also show roaming partners for different countries with SK Telecom. You might want to check KTF Telecom as well.
