My favorite is the fictitious CAPT. Savage created by a bunch of US Army pay clerks in WWII. They had him listed as being in every major battle of the European theater and getting wounded in each one. He received all major awards and promotions possible and at the end of the war he was listed as missing in action and each of the personnel and pay clerks that put this character together were on the beneficiary forms and received his entitlement before they were discharged themselves. They also received his pay and divided it equally amongst themselves! I think at the end CAPT. Savage was a full colonel before he was MIA. This is why they separated finance and personnel after the war. But it was eventually restored to its original structure.
