Pros: no one knows you have them, no worrying about breaking your glasses, don't have to wipe down lens, easy to care for (if disposable).
Cons: they can dry out, the can pop out, sometimes uncomfortable if dirt gets in your eye, and hard to care for them if they are hard lenses or gas permeable.
Yes, I think a 12 yr old should get them. No more name calling like 4 eyes or bottle caps. And it help you look mature and be more self confident as you go into middle school and high school. I believe they are helpful in sports too, they won't slip off you nose while you sweat!

the pros and cons have been pretty well covered. I'd add that it is IMPORTANT to have both, the contacts and a pair of glasses in current Rx. As an eyewear consultant, I've seen way too many contact wearers come in desperately needing glasses because they have an eye infection and can't wear their contacts.
The question to ask, is the 12 yo responsible? When I wanted contacts as a kid, the doc asked mom how'd my room look....

With contacts you have a wider angle of vision, better vision, and for a 12 years old that could change his/her life, because the child are very cruel with people who use glasses. I think is the best age for starting using. The child must learn how to clean and conserve them with responsability!!.

Pros: glasses don't cover face
can se clearer and larger view than glasses
Cons: If you take them of at night and suddenly decide to watch tv it's quite irritating having to put them back on
your 12 year old should trie them on, if his eyes accept them then get them, if not then dont.
I would suggest geting both glasses and contacts.

I have the same problem! My mom said I could get them, but I'm a little scared. I'm 12 years old too. I heard that it's harder to put them in than to take them out. And I also heard that it's not scary. Hope it helps!

i've had contacts since i was 12,i'm now 30,i don't know what i would have done without them, get soft ones.
but i do recommend that when you get older probaly in your 20's(so start saving now)to get laser eye surgery(lasik)there's no pain, takes about 2 minutes and has changed my life,i went from being legally blind to 20/20 in 4 months and its still getting better each day.worth every penny.

I know I definitely wasn't responsible enough when I was 12 for contacts. You really have to take care of them.

If he/she is mature enough to care for them properly. Some kids are, some are not.
I could never wear glasses. I lost them, sat on them, couldn't keep them clean and hated them. Never have any problem with contacts. The most important thing is that they must fit. It you can feel them in your eye your doctor has not fitted you properly. I forget mine are in my eyes. I shower with them, swim with them, sleep with them and would not have it any other way.

well it all depends how deep that 12-year-old's eye sight is. if it is 300 or so then go for it.
