I suspect there is something legitimately wrong with this individual, although I do not know clinically what to call it. Bipolar perhaps, or manic-depressive. This individual is a single, older woman. Emotional states vary between euphoric & miserable. Very demeaning & insulting, either directly, but mostly in a thinly veiled fashion. Grandstands & creates unnecessary dilemmas/scenes, especially when she knows others are within earshot. Sneaky & will rifle staff's offices when they're out sick/on vacation, logon to their pc's, read their email, redial #s on their phones. Fawns over higher ups & blatantly kisses the asses of those in other departments, but will insult same individuals behind their back. Constantly creates a tension-filled environment for subordinates.
At this pt I find it hard to look directly at her, even in conversation. I'm that disgusted, & I know I will ultimately have to quit, but I hate doing nothing about this. This kind of behavior should not be allowed.

Unless your work has a harasment policy, all I can suggst is Backup backup & backup. Cover your *** to prevent being blamed for turned into a scrapegoat.

Believe me it's no fun trying to create a papertrail to prove your innocence after being falsely accused of something.

Troy, this scenario is all too familiar in the work place. She sounds bitter, resentful, fearful and has fallen into a category of self preservation at any cost. If it is a government job, you might as well transfer or look for another one. So many layers in those type of jobs. If she has been around forever, she is locked in forever. She is crossing the line of professional conduct and unless you can actually prove it, it will continue. There is nothing worse than a tense atmosphere at work. I would absolutely avoid her at all cost, and when you have to be in her presence, distance yourself, remain aloof and do not give her any ammunition to do anything to you. Make sure you protect yourself regarding your email, cover your tracks at all times. Good luck, start looking for a happier environment, life is too short my friend.

I am a great fan of documentation. What did she do? What was said. Time place. Be specific. Be thorough. Don't document rumours, only what you know or have observed. Then when you have enough,(and apparently it will only take a couple of weeks with this gal) approach your boss with the documentation.

In the meantime, get your resume out there. You will have time while you are preparing this little bombshell. Either way, you will be in a position to stay when she is fired, or move on when nothing is done to address her behaviour.

couldn't you go to talk to someone above her? maybe they have had complaints before, but no one will take the stand? maybe thats what they are looking for. anyways, best way to start is by talking to someone who's higher up then her. cause clearly she has crossed all violations in the work setting. it shouldn't be allowed and you should do something about it

You should just quit.
I have worked with sickos like this before.
It won't do any good to tell anybody about her, they already know.
If the higher ups cared they would do something about her behavior.
Just leave, don't let her ruin your life.
