from the two outside lanes on motorways at peak times.
They just seem to take forever to over take each other and hold up the traffic.

All trailers are banned from the outside lane of a 3+ lane motorway in any case. In much of Europe - Spain for example - the only heavies allowed on the road from midday Saturday to midnight Sunday are those carrying perishable goods or infrastructural stuff like fuel. Roads are much clearer at weekends for the tourists.

But the reason for HGVs to take so long to pass another is that they are limited to a set speed and despite having plenty of power, the driver can only get past more quickly if he turns the electronic limiter off.

I just love all the answers from the poorly informed and purely ignorant who say "Ban all HGVs!"

How do you think the food gets to the supermarket?
The beer to the pub?
The petrol to the filling station?
The parts to the car workshop?
The toys to the toyshop?
The gardening and home improvement equipment to the DIY shop?

That's right, it all gets there on lorries!

I'll vote for the banning of HGVs when my local Tesco's has a rail-yard outside, or my local petrol station gets it's own canal branch.

Remember, "If you've got it, a truck brought it".

HGVs are already banned from the outside lane of a 3 or 4 lane motorway, anyway. You'd do far batter to ban the idiots who drive up the outside lanes in their cars at 60mph, because they are too paranoid (or too stupid) to speed up or move over.

The reason trucks struggle to pass each other has nothing to do with power - the average artic has between 400bhp and 600bhp.
They struggle because they are fitted with speed limiters. FOR YOUR SAFETY.
Since 1992, all HGVs over 7.5 tonnes have been limited to 56mph, by E.U. law. FOR YOUR SAFETY.
As of January 1st this year, vehicles between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes have also been limited to 56mph. FOR YOUR SAFETY.
As speed limiters are fitted for your safety, they must be a good thing, mustn't they? So why is everyone complaining? The E.U never makes mistakes, does it?

Don't forget, the Government wants to fit speed limiters to all your cars too. FOR YOUR SAFETY.

Obviously scouse has never heard of Lord Beeching who decimated British railways, closing branch lines and getting British Rail to part with so much stock it never recovered.

I for one would be more inclined to ban the idiots who think because they have a car capable of 120 mph they have to drive at that speed, no matter what the weather.

YES YES YES and whats worse is when they go uphill and the muppet hgv driver in the second lane starts lagging behind again so all that waiting for what the muppet just to pull back in behind. They continue to state they are going to extend the motorways why not just build a hgv lane much easier

Entirely agree with you about HGVs. Why do these trucking idiots think they can overtake on a three lane highway? What they do is slowly pull alongside the truck on the inside lane, then swap road yarns for several miles, resulting in major tail-backs for several miles.

We should ban all goods vehicles from Motorways here in UK on a Sunday. They do in Austria. Makes a Sunday drive a real pleasure. Not here in UK.

Well they are allready restricted to lanes 1 and 2 so lane 3 should not be used by them,i know that some ignorant drivers do use lane 3 but if they are caught , they are severely dealt with.

They should be banned from the two outside lanes at all times.

I think far greater use should be made of the railways for starters. With modern technology it could be done thus reliving the roads of a lot of long didtance travel. A roll on roll off would do the job with hourly services and quicker movement between routes

They should use rail and barges for moving more cargo that way the number of trucks on the road would decrease. Then you could limit trucks to one lane.
