Honestly, I've used it maybe three times since I've had it..about four years! How often do I need to change them when I play regularly? I heard every week or every other week. Help me please? =) How much does it cost to replace the strings? Will $20 be enough to cover it? Help! I have a yamaha eg112c.

I play regularly and I only change mine about 2x per year. Unless you are performing professionally 2-3/mth., you shouldn't need to change them much more than that.
The last set I bought about 3 months ago cost me $8.00.

I strongly recommend changing your strings at least once a month, provided you play almost every day. When, and if, you start to perform regularly, you ought to change them every two weeks or a few days before a performance.

Loosening the strings are good only when you intend not to play the guitar for several months. It is the loosening and re-tightening of the strings that bring about breakage so easily. Of my six guitars, I keep four of them tuned all the time. The other two have nylon strings and I don't care that much for them because they do nothing to toughen up my calluses.

You can order from Musician's Friend packs of strings at a great discount--averaging less than $10 a set of quality-brand strings. Investing in a higher grade of string, such as Elixer brand, will give you longevity of use. The Elixers cost about $13 if you order them from Musician's Friend and around $16 if you buy them at a music store.

Get back into the groove--start playing more!

Well, do they look dirty or rusty? Either way, it's pretty much personal preference. Some players go months without changing strings. Personally, once they start getting dirty and rusty, they aren't as comfortable to play nor do they sound very good. So it's really up to you, if you still like the way they play and sound, go ahead and keep using them until one breaks. As for price, 5 to 10 bucks should cover it easily. Just read up on how to string a guitar, it's easy to learn and doesn't take too long once you get the hang of it.

Unless you're performing don't worry about changing them. I'm a guitarist (not professionally), been playing for 35 years. I change strings only when they break. If you're not going to play for extended periods of time, though, you should loosen the strings so they'll last longer. The strings should last a long time, except for B and high E (the top two) which break fairly easily if you do a lot of bends.

when playing regularly, i think monthly. Strings usually acquire too much moisture with the player and the surroundings, changing strings monthly wont be a real problem

but here's my tip, since you don't like changing string much often...

1. try buying some silica gel, put some of it in your room and your guitar case

2. apply some grease before and after you play (like wd 40 or singer oil)

3. this one is a very old tip: try boiling the strings, we do that when the string is so rusty and we can't buy a new one, so instead of buying cheaper and low quality strings we boil them

4. hmm cut your long nails if you have some

You can keep strings for quite awhile. 20 bucks will buy you a standard pair but if you want good ones it will take more. I'd say go with the cheap ones until you get better and want a more distinct sound.
