LAPD wants, my full name, address, all my previous address, all my previous work, my social security number, my mother's maiden name, bank name & bank account numbers, all my credit card name and numbers etcetera. They have more information about me than what I can remember. Is it safe regarding identity theft? I am afraid that one bad LAPD employee might use my info to do identity theft. I have excellent FICO score. How safe is it?

What they are asking for is required by law in CA. Every cop in the state has had the same type background investigation.

Oooooooooh, if this bothers you just wait for the polygraph & psychological exam!

My step-son just got his packet from the LASO. They wanted the same information plus any sealed court records.

Generally, these agencies do a pretty good job of protecting their information. Lots of very harsh penalties for screwing around with police information.

Standard background check procedure and information. It's a lot safer than when you give a waiter or waitress your credit card and have them go run it through the machine.

Pretty standard procedure. Fact is they want to know your credit history, how you bank these days including how prompt you are with payments. If you are in debt they figure you are a lot more likely to accept a bribe.

If they wanted to steal your identity, they wouldn't have a problem with you submitting information.

If you are dumb enough to ask this question, I don't think you should apply for LAPD.

every police agency does that now.
that's standard. they won't hire just any joe shmo - they have to do a detailed background on you to make sure you are a viable candidate and a person worthy of wearing the badge

it is not safe. this gives at least 20 people access to everything to steal your identity. but what is another 20 when a hundred people already have enough info to ruin you.
however if you want a job with them you have to do this as it is not illegal.
